The Beatles complete 1970 John Lennon demo with AI and receive Grammy nomination
The Beatles have recently completed their long-awaited 1970 demo from John Lennon that uses the power of AI and have received grammy nominations for the feat.
The 67th annual Grammy Award nominees were revealed on November 8 with several surprising selections. Iconic music group The Beatles are back in the spotlight once again after receiving two Grammy nominations in two top categories. This comes after their amazing revival of their last song with the late John Lennon who passed in 1980 that also features an AI attribution of two bandmembers. Their final group ballad “Now and Then” was restored through artificial intelligence and released in November 2023.
The timeless track is bridging the past and present in music with a return to mainstream. When the nostalgic tune dropped, fans of all ages and backgrounds were in awe of how well it captured The Beatles “now” and “then,” which seems only fitting for a song title. The group officially broke up on December 29, 1974, but their music lives on. They may have split up nearly 50 years ago, but their recent hit track is now a contender in top Grammy categories.
“Now and Then” was originally a 1970s John Lennon Demo that was never completed. Thanks to AI-assisted vocal separation, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were able to finish the song. It is enhanced by advanced machine learning techniques that highlight individual aspects of the song.
There were several processes that took place to bring together The Beatles’ unique melody. Peter Jackson and his team isolated the vocals and instrumentals in the song and blended it with modern technology to maintain The Beatles’ sound. Using AI in music isn’t new and John Summit even recently used a Kanye West-inspired AI voice at his EDC Orlando set in November 2024.
The 67th annual Grammy Awards are expected to be on February 2, 2025, almost a year and a half after the song’s debut. Although “Now and Then” is enhanced with machine learning, it still complies with Grammy guidelines, which allows songs with AI “elements” as long as they follow a simple rule. They must pay homage to the contributions of the original human creators.
The Beatles are competing against Record of the Year alongside Beyoncé for her song “Break My Soul.” They are also up for Best Rock Performance against classic and hard rock groups like Green Day and Pearl Jam who have made special appearances at festivals like Bonnaroo. Music lovers will have to pay special attention to the event results to see if “Now and Then” clinched the top spot.
