John Summit calls out X’s growing toxicity, says it’s hurting artists’ mental health
Celebrities like John Summit call out X’s increased toxicity which has impacted the way they interact with fans.
John Summit has never been one to shy away from sharing his thoughts on social media. In fact, he regularly posts his views on the EDM community on different platforms. Earlier this week, John Summit called out X’s increased toxicity and how it is impacting his peer’s mental health.
The Chicago DJ highlights the growing problem of negative online commentary directed at artists, which is increasingly harmful to their mental health. Many DJs actively engage with fans on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), but the constant wave of negative comments has taken a toll. Some artists are now avoiding social media entirely to protect their well-being. This trend is especially disappointing, considering that EDM and rave culture are rooted in themes of community and positivity.
It doesn’t take long after a festival or big event for people to come to X to share their two cents, whether it be positive or negative. Summit’s tweet comes just one day after his EDC Orlando performance in which he highlighted some of the comments people have made about him recently. Fittingly, Summit used an AI intro of Kanye West stating “I miss the old Summit” alongside different claims about him like who he is dating and what type of music he puts out.
While John can make light of the comments he’s faced recently, he highlights the deeper issue of online toxicity on X and its damaging effect on morale. Artists like Dombresky and Gordo responded to his tweet, stating that they have felt the toxicity as well. In response, Chasewest reminded fans that DJs are human beings who put in a lot of effort to elevate their work and share with others.
It’s so easy to forget that there are people on the other side of screens, but artists are pleading with their audiences to be more mindful. This is especially important for this community as so much of its success is attributed to its foundation of being kind, uplifting, and motivating towards each other. So often we see DJs and producers interacting with one another through social media platforms to share music and collaborate. As fans, we get excited to see collaborations, whether this be through new music or coming together to create shows or festivals.
Artists work tirelessly to share their art with the world, and these efforts extend far beyond the music itself—it includes the production of their shows and the craftsmanship that unites thousands of people. As fans, we need to communicate our opinions more thoughtfully on social media and remember that real people are on the receiving end of our words. It’s okay to not agree with everything someone puts out but respect goes a long way. And if you’re someone who has felt the effects of online negativity, know that resources are available to help and it’s okay to ask for help!
