David Guetta claims he’s an ‘entertainer’ and not a DJ in recent interview

David Guetta has boldly stated that he sees himself primarily as an “entertainer” rather than a traditional DJ.

David Guetta recently got real with Kiss FM UK about the difference between a DJ and an entertainer. This distinction, he argues, reflects the evolving landscape of live performances in the electronic music scene. Acknowledging the potential for controversy in his statement, he explains that “there are now two different jobs in our profession.”

The first is an entertainer, which Guetta mainly identifies as. Separately, there is a DJ, whose job is to “tak[e] people on a journey” and “show[] them new music.” Furthermore, to prove his point, he notes that “95% [of his shows] is [his] own music.” To drive the point home, he analogizes his performances to “a concert, but in [their] own way.”

Guetta’s perspective highlights a significant shift in how audiences engage with live music. Specifically, he added that “at all the successful shows that we have now, people are not dancing anymore.” He considers this entertaining because “people are looking at the show, want a full production… [and are mostly] filming.” Undoubtedly, this statement has sparked conversations about the future of modern DJing and live performances.

The Parisian-born David Guetta has been a pioneering force in the electronic music scene since the late 1980s. His remarkable career is rife with numerous achievements, including two Grammy Awards and collaborations with some of the biggest names in music. Outside of electronic music, some of these include Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha, and Justin Bieber. Moreover, he has collaborated with popular DJs like Joel Corry, Afrojack, and Alesso.

Having grown up just an earshot from Ultra Miami's venue Bayfront Park, it was next to impossible for me not to fall in love with electronic music. My love for music was evidently strong enough for me to write my college essay on festival culture and continue attending Ultra for 10+ years now. I have always had a knack for writing and the power of words, which I continued cultivating through a Philosophy degree in college. Now a law school graduate, I eventually hope to merge my passions by working in music law. I am an avid traveler and am certainly not afraid to hop on a plane for a music event. My next bucket list festivals to attend are Tomorrowland in Belgium and Sonus in Croatia. Though the list could go on forever, some of my favorite artists include Franky Wah, Mochakk, Kevin de Vries, and Eli Brown.
