On World Mental Health Day, Opiuo reflects on his journey to achieving sobriety.

October 10th marks World Mental Health day. In the spirit of celebration, Opiuo opened up about his journey to sobriety. Fans and artists alike, have flooded Opiuo’s Instagram post with congratulatory messages. This DJ from New Zealand has shared the positive impacts his journey to sobriety has had on his quality of life.

Oscar Davey-Wraight, otherwise introduced to us as Opiuo, has influenced the EDM scene with his groovy basslines and vibrant beats. He’s had collaborations with artists like CloZee, Ashez, and Big Gigantic which create a unique sonic experience for fans of intricate rhythms. It’s clear Opiuo is heading towards significant career milestones as he raves about his sobriety and how it’s benefited him.

Opiuo has previously commemorated significant life achievements on Instagram like taking his daughters to their first psytrance dance and settling in a new state with his family. It’s evident that Opiuo has important family values, and he’s expressed how sobriety has allowed him to experience deeper levels of gratitude for life and those he shares it with.

We hope to continue hearing about Opiuo’s successful journey as he embarks on his 2024/2025 North American Tour, ‘Dates & Things,’ accompanied by incredible acts like Mersive, Inzo, Daily Bread, and Of The Trees. This ensemble of artists is sure to deliver a memorable experience.

As more and more artists speak out about their journeys to sobriety, conversations about mental health in the EDM community can be expected to increase. Historically, this community has been associated with regular alcohol and drug use, however, artists like LSDream, Kaskade, and Illenium have been very vocal about encouraging healthy behavior while still enjoying the collective experiences.

It’s interesting to note how artists have articulated how they envision the experience of their shows. Patrick Topping, for example, has implemented a sober show to encourage fans to come together and celebrate the music that brings the community together. Music ultimately has the power to impact lives, and the collective spaces these artists curate have the opportunity to spread positive messages. That’s exactly what Opiuo has done recently by bravely sharing his journey.
