Who are the top Swedish electronic dance music acts of all time?
Many Swedish electronic dance music artists have changed the game over the years, pushing the boundaries of both sound design and show production.
The history of electronic dance music and the artists who helped shape it is incredibly diverse. DJs and producers from all over the globe have put their stamps on one or more of the countless branches of the umbrella genre – or created new branches altogether. One region that has bubbled over with influential artists since the turn of the century is the Nordic country of Sweden which, especially relative to its size, has held an impressive grip on the culture worldwide over the past two decades. But which Swedish artists have left the most prominent and indelible marks on electronic dance music?
5. Eric Prydz
Techno and progressive house trailblazer Eric Prydz burst onto the scene with his 2004 hit “Call On Me” and kept the train rolling with 2008’s “Pjanoo.” Prydz opted not to join his good friends as a member of Swedish House Mafia when it officially formed in 2008, but instead forged his own path with full creative control. Perhaps his greatest contribution to the electronic dance music scene has been his innovative EPIC and HOLO live shows that incorporate enormous holograms for an unbelievable live show experience that he’s brought to both Tomorrowland and Coachella in recent years.
4. Galantis
Led by the triple-platinum “Runaway(U & I),” the double-platinum “No Money,” and the single-platinum “Peanut Butter Jelly,” Galantis has done its part to push electronic dance music into the mainstream. Formerly a duo consisting of Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson and Linus “Style of Eye” Eklöw, Karlsson took over the project solo in 2018 and has continued to peddle the same hyper-happy, pop-adjacent tunes that shot them to international fame. Collaborations with the likes of Charli XCX, OneRepublic, Passion Pit, and Dolly Parton have kept fans on their toes and expanded Galantis’ reach even further since 2020.
3. Alesso
Undeniably among the most popular electronic dance music artists in the entire world, Alesso (Alessandro Lindblad) stands shoulder-to-shoulder with legends like Martin Garrix, David Guetta, and Calvin Harris. The Stockholm native first came into the public eye around 2012 and made his name with his iconic 2014 track “Heroes (we could be).” Straddling the line between larger-than-life festival headliner and behind-the-scenes maestro of radio pop hits, Alesso is one of the proudest Swedish musical exports of all time.
2. Swedish House Mafia
For obvious reasons, Swedish House Mafia is likely the first name that comes to mind for many when they think of Swedish electronic dance music artists. The supergroup consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso – all incredibly accomplished in their own rights – released a generational smash hit in 2012 with “Don’t You Worry Child,” and then did it again a decade later with “Moth To A Flame” featuring The Weeknd. Thankfully, the progressive house titans have stuck around since they ended their ten-year hiatus, continuing to push the envelope both in the studio and on the stage.
1. Avicii
If anyone deserves to top Swedish House Mafia in a ranking of most influential electronic dance music acts, it’s certainly Avicii (Tim Bergling). His list of tracks that have surpassed one billion streams on Spotify – “Wake Me Up,” “The Nights,” “Waiting For Love,” “Hey Brother,” and “Levels” – merely scratches the surface of the historic impact that Avicii had on electronic dance music. Though his time on this Earth was cut tragically short, his time spreading love and creating beautiful moments continues through his lasting music and the music of the countless artists he’s inspired.
