Richie Hawtin slams DJ peers for not supporting producer payout platform Aslice after news of company close
Renowned producer and Aslice advocator, Richie Hawtin, expresses disappointment towards the trajectory of the electronic dance music ecosystem.
Despite its innovative approach, Aslice struggles to compete financially in this evolving industry. Renowned British-Canadian electronic music producer and DJ Richie Hawtin has a few words to say about the tragic shutdown of the company, specifically regarding artists and the trajectory of the dance music industry as a whole.
Aslice is a community-driven, revenue-sharing software. To illustrate, the software is intended for working producers, DJs, and industry professionals who aim to bring balance back into the dance music ecosystem. Moreover, the intuitive system ensures music producers are compensated fairly for their music being played by other DJs.
As an active advocator for the progression of the electronic dance music ecosystem, Richie Hawtin claims that the software concept is the most important idea he has seen. The renowned producer paid into the intuitive system for two years before the company’s closing.
On the other side of the conversation, Richie Hawtin calls out major DJs for their lack of support towards Aslice. Hawtin expresses his disappointment with the lack of support for a tool that could fast forward the momentum of the dance music industry as a whole.
Richie explains how the dance music industry’s ecosystem has become more imbalanced. Specifically, the renowned producer explains how a producer gets paid for the music they make, but the money goes into the pockets of the DJs who play it.
Hawtin compares the past state of the electronic dance music industry to now. In the past, DJs were not paid as much, but anywhere between 25,000 to 50,000 underground records were constantly being sold. This previously created a healthy and fair ecosystem of track sharing and support.
In less than four years, Aslice proves to the dance music industry that real change is possible. The company provides statistics showing that 60% of music producers surveyed have earned more from Aslice than all their other music income combined, Additionally, 29% of music producers surveyed received their first-ever payment for their music through Aslice.
