Instagram adds new profile song feature similar to Myspace

Early 2000s Myspace users rejoice with the latest Instagram feature that allows users to add songs to their profile page.

With all things Y2K being a top trend in 2024, Instagram has introduced a new song feature that allows users to enhance their profiles with music, reminiscent of Myspace’s iconic concept from back in the day. Meta, the parent company of the social media platform, explains that users can now add their favorite songs directly to their profiles, creating a personalized auditory experience for page visitors.

This new song feature is set to roll out gradually and will allow users to select a track from a massive song library to add a personalization touch to their profile page. Once added, the song plays automatically when someone visits the user’s profile. This product feature marks a significant shift in Instagram’s approach to profile customization and aims to create a more immersive social media experience. Although interesitingly enough, this concept already existed on Myspace 20 years ago.

In a nostalgic nod to those good old early 2000s days, Instagram’s decision to incorporate music into user profiles fills a void for those who fondly remember using Myspace, where music was a key element to their online identity. With the app’s algorithms constantly changing, this new feature will also hopefully aid in enhancing overall user engagement and interaction.

The implementation of this new profile song feature also reflects the platform’s ongoing efforts to remain as the top innovator within the social media space. It’s top competitor, TikTok, relies heavily on music-filled content as well, but the platform is only meant for video content. With that in mind, Instagram took this as an opportunity to launch a music feature that is nonexistant within its competitive market.

By offering users the option to post both video and photo content on their profile pages unlike TikTok, Instagram hopes to attract a wider audience and capitalize on the ongoing popularity of music in social media and content creation culture. This re-developed concept of integrating music to user profiles directly is bound to generate a shift in the music landscape moving forward.
