Yung Gravy denies claim by Hawk Tuah Girl that he asked her on a date, sharing screenshots on Twitter in a series of clap-backs.
Rapper Yung Gravy has refuted claims made by internet sensation Haliey Welch (a.k.a. Hawk Tuah Girl) about him asking her on a date. The drama unfolded after Welch, who shot to fame in July for her candid response in a viral video, shared details of her private messages with the rapper. While Yung Gravy denies claims of shooting his shot, Hawk Tuah Girl has held her ground amid the back-and-forth.
Haliey Welch became an overnight sensation after a street interview with podcasters Tim and Dee in Nashville, Tennessee. When asked about a move that drives men crazy, Welch iconically replied, “give ’em that “hawk tuah” and spit on that thing.” This offbeat remark has quickly catapulted the 22-year-old from Belfast, Tennessee, into the limelight. Namely, Hawk Tuah Girl has made appearances at music events from Miami to New York and beyond.
Recently, Welch revealed to TMZ that Yung Gravy had slid into her DMs since her rise to fame. The 28-year-old rapper, a.k.a. Matthew Raymond Hauri, is famous for his playful tracks blending trap, old-school, and modern rap. Yung Gravy has garnered a massive following, especially among Gen Z, with hits like “Mr. Clean” and “Betty (Get Money).”
In her interview, Welch claimed that Yung Gravy wanted to “get with” her and had asked her on a date. “He wants to take me on a date. I was like, ‘Nah, I don’t know about that,’” she said. However, Yung Gravy swiftly took to social media to set the record straight.
Posting a screenshot of their conversation on Twitter, Yung Gravy wrote “can’t be nice anymore lol”. The screenshot revealed that Welch messaged him first, saying “Hello sir” at 1:44 a.m. In his reply, Gravy commended her for leveraging her viral fame and extended an invitation to one of his shows, clarifying he wasn’t trying to flirt.
In response, Welch responded with her own series of screenshots, showing that Yung Gravy had reached out first. To further drive the point home, she captioned the post “Close but no gravy 🤓.” Welch extended an olive branch the next day. “ Nonetheless, she later extended an olive branch, tweeting, “Maybe I misread it. Let’s call a truce Mr Gravy 🤪”. While it is still unclear what the DM slide actually meant, it’s certainly clear that both parties are trying to move past the misunderstanding.
