Above & Beyond celebrates 5 years of ‘Flow State’ following the project’s initial debut at Burning Man
Above & Beyond’s acclaimed album, ‘Flow State,’ is celebrating its fifth anniversary.
A project that has significantly influenced the music world since its debut on July 19, 2019. Inspired by yoga and mindfulness, ‘Flow State’ has taken listeners on a panoramic journey of ambient compositions and warm, neo-classical soundscapes.
Above & Beyond has always transcended the traditional boundaries of dance music. From recording an acoustic album to drawing inspiration from the Colorado Red Rocks Amphitheatre for their 2018 single “Red Rocks,” Above & Beyond has continually explored new artistic horizons. With ‘Flow State,’ they have crafted an album that promotes mental fitness and overall happiness through music.
‘Flow State’ has emerged as a powerful tool for mindfulness, beginning with a serendipitous moment at Burning Man in 2014. A spontaneous sunset yoga set on the Robot Heart stage, guided by renowned yogi Elena Brower, ignited the spark for this project. This magical experience inspired the group to incorporate yoga sets into their global gigs, creating transformative experiences for audiences at iconic venues like The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington and Huntington Beach, California. The original Burning Man yoga set has since amassed over two million streams on SoundCloud, underscoring its profound impact.
Following the success of their 2018 album ‘Common Ground,’ which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Dance Recording for “Northern Soul,” Above & Beyond has continued to push the envelope with ‘Flow State.’ The album represents a culmination of their journey toward self-discovery and emotional acceptance. Paavo Siljamäki of the group reflected on this, stating, “Our music has always been about getting in touch with and understanding and accepting our emotions. With the Flow State project, we want to help bring people’s attention and focus towards helping themselves find better mental fitness and overall happiness in life.”
Over the past five years, ‘Flow State’ has provided a 49-minute meditative experience that has resonated with listeners worldwide. The album’s release coincided with International Yoga Day and was accompanied by a three-song sampler EP and a 13-minute talk on self-acceptance by Brower. This project has enriched the band’s discography and contributed to the conversation of broader mindfulness and mental well-being.
As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of ‘Flow State,’ it is evident that Above & Beyond has indeed gone above and beyond, creating music that heals, inspires, and elevates.
