Gem & Tauri shut down relationship split rumors after 6-month show hiatus

With breakup rumors swirling around them and seven lions, Gem & Tauri have returned with their first show in half a year and a new single.

Over the past several months, fans have speculated as to the status of the polyamorous relationship between Seven Lions (Jeff Montalvo), wife Emma Montalvo, and Courtney Simmons. A string of posts by Jeff and Emma with Courtney conspicuously missing led some to guess that Courtney had left the relationship, which had been active since 2019. Emma and Courtney, who together make up the house music duo Gem & Tauri, had also not played a show together or released music together in more than six months, adding more intrigue to the rumors.

Now, Gem & Tauri have broken their silence – musically, at least – both on stage and in the studio. This past weekend, the duo played their first show together in about half a year at Insomniac’s Lost In Dreams festival in Los Angeles, where Seven Lions also performed. The day before their set, Gem & Tauri also released their first original song together since their “Crownless” EP in May 2023: “Free Falling” featuring Eyes Everywhere and vocalist Sarah de Warren.

After a roughly two-month hiatus from posting on their Gem & Tauri Instagram account, they returned with two posts in June to tease new music and promote their announced Lost in Dreams set. A string of posts followed, including one featuring a loving photoshoot of Emma and Courtney. In response to one fan commenting on their polyamorous relationship, Gem & Tauri responded urging them to “enjoy how hard we work on our art and less about our own personal lives!”

While there has been no formal statement from any of the three about the status of their relationship, the return of Gem & Tauri indicates that they have at least reconciled professionally. After Lost In Dreams festival, the duo also included a picture of them with Seven Lions in an Instagram post, calling him “the amazing guy that believes in us and helps us finish fun tunes.” It’s unclear whether the three will ever explain what happened to cause the apparent rift in their relationship, but it seems things are currently on good terms.
