Nostalgix reveals the celestial symbolism behind her Star City EP [Interview]

Bass house queen Nostalgix has garnered a lot of attention and excitement with her combination of masterfully mixed music and undeniably cool aesthetics – and it’s only up from here.

Exron Music had the chance to sit down for a chat with Nostalgix (Negar Hamidzadeh) right after her rip-roaring set at Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge 2024 on Saturday, June 22. Coming straight from the decks of one of her signature pulsingly energetic sets, Negar immediately welcomed us with a calming air of warmth and sincerity. Her talent for creating music and DJing is obvious, but our conversation made clear the impressive level of deliberate care and genuine passion she puts into the Nostalgix project.

Negar had just come from her solo set at the Caterpillar’s Garden stage, but it wasn’t her first performance of the weekend. At the Friday pre-party, she took the Mad Hatter’s Castle stage with German bass house star Marten Hørger for the longtime friends’ first-ever b2b set, with “magical” results. While she loves the unique energy of occasional b2b sets, including one coming up with Jessica Audiffred, she doesn’t see herself becoming part of a full-time duo, a move that would limit the degree to which she could be the sole “creative director” of her music and sets.

Her recent ‘Star City‘ EP and accompanying tour visuals show exactly how incredible her results can be as the creative director. Negar shared with us the concept behind this EP and the visuals in which Nostalgix inhabits the namesake Star City and makes it her own. She’s very excited to “dig in” to a debut full-length album in the future, but clarified that she doesn’t want to rush it and that she may just “make a lot of singles and have fun with it” for a while before she takes on that project.

Going back to the beginning, Negar “fell in love with bass house in 2017” when she saw Dr. Fresch perform in Vancouver and became “obsessed” with creating that type of music and “finding herself within the sound.” She was certainly able to find herself in that genre, and the resulting success has taken her to some amazing places – most recently, Japan and Korea. Her three shows there “blew her expectations out of the water” and left her wanting to schedule her return immediately.

Lastly, Negar told us about her iconic orange hair, calling it her “favorite thing ever” since she decided to make the change years ago. She plans to change to a new color eventually, but says it’s “definitely staying for a while… stay tuned.” Exron Music will absolutely be staying tuned for Nostalgix’s next hair color, her debut album, and everything in between.
