Barclay Crenshaw Drops debut Hip-Hop Single ‘Cannibal Strings’
Barclay Crenshaw surprises fans with a new hip-hop track “Cannibal Strings” featuring his own lyrics and vocals.
Barclay Crenshaw (aka Claude VonStroke and the founder of Dirtybird Records) has done it yet again. In an everlasting evolution of sound and style, Barclay Crenshaw released his first-ever rap track “Cannibal Strings” just a few months after releasing his latest album, ‘Open Channel.’
The industry legend on the scene for over two decades has welcomed transformation throughout his career. Beginning his career as Claude VonStroke (a house, minimal, and tech house legend) and shortly after creating the iconic record label DirtyBird, Crenshaw has been a household name for over 20 years. His real name, Barclay Crenshaw, is finally getting its time to shine as the stage name of his newest endeavor in sound honing in on his skills as bass, experimental, dub, pop, and now hip-hop.
Crenshaw is an acclaimed artist who knows how to grow and evolve, contributing to his 20-year career success as an artist, DJ, and producer. “Cannibal Strings,” is a nostalgic return to his roots in music – selling his cassette mixtapes door to door in his youth.
The well-rounded musician reminisces with adoration, “I have made hip-hop in the past but never donned the mic as the emcee on an official release. As early as eleven years old I was beatboxing into one tape deck then playing it back and rapping into another in his bathtub (for the reverb.) In the early 90’s, I even recorded a full rap album and sold the cassettes door-to-door and made $800. On “Cannibal Strings” I discuss the sale of my record label and the wild change from being a 20-year veteran house DJ (Claude VonStroke) to a brand new emcee.”
Barclay Crenshaw’s “Cannibal Strings” draws influence from his earlier days and artists such as MF Doom and Rakim. The lyrics are witty, expressive, and clever. They touch upon his life and past, and some tongue-in-cheek musings and commentary on today’s world.
