Ibiza residents protest over tourism in 1k person march ahead of busy summer season
Ibiza Residents have resorted to signs and pickets to reveal their dismay surrounding tourism.
Ibiza residents have protested over tourism in a 1k person march ahead of a busy summer season. A highly sought-after destination, Ibiza has hosted top-tier artists at premiere clubs and venues. The island in the Mediterranean has built a formidable reputation for itself, as long summer nights and refreshing water match nicely with the pulsating music.
Seemingly, Ibiza residents have tolerated an influx of fanatics during the warmer months since the island became a must-fit in holiday plans. Ibiza, a Balearic island specifically, rose to touristic prominence in the 1980s. Residents have since seen a stark rise in tourism.
The music zealots that travel long hours have seemingly not paid much attention to the local activism regarding over-populated summers. Many of the locals have raised concerns about inflated rental prices that are far out of financial reach. The busy summer ahead has certainly revitalized the sentiments of these residents.
On the other hand, tourism has tremendously helped the local economy in many respects, as restaurants, bars, and cultural attractions are often visited. Music lovers have flocked for not only music but the landscape and sunsets – a fair enough reason to travel. The question remains: is this a fair tradeoff?
The month of May has already seen some compelling performances from a variety of artists. The likes of Mau P, Mousse T., Purple Disco Machine, and more have graced the many clubs hosted on the island. The following lineups are sure to be equally exhilarating as the summer goes into its deeper months.
Prominent Ibiza clubs like Hï Ibiza, Pacha, and Amnesia have always been the main contenders in galvanizing large crowds. The greatest aspect of these clubs, drawing in people, has now proven to be a serious detriment. It seems the residents have only just kickstarted their fervent pushback against tourists.
