Inside the making of the Wicked Movie Soundtrack ahead of the November release

In November, we wear green for the Wicked Movie.

Wicked, one of the most beloved musicals of all time, is coming to theaters as a major motion picture. Wicked Movie, which was split into two parts (respectively debuting in 2024 and 2025), will star Grammy-winner and international pop star Ariana Grande and Grammy and Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo. Wicked’s Broadway run represents the fourth longest in history – it has more than 20 years and almost 8,000 performances. It’s been seen by more than 65 million people worldwide and has amassed 5 billion and then some in gross sales. Wicked Movie is the classic story the world knows and loves, consumed in a novel and accessible way.

With her portrayal of the bubbly, popular “good witch” Glinda, Grande returns to her musical theatre roots – the star got her start in show business in 13 The Musical, a pop production that amassed a cult following after a brief run on Broadway in the early 2000s. British actress Erivo, who will portray Elpheba or the “green witch,” came to fame after staring in Broadway’s The Color Purple in 2016, a highly acclaimed revival produced by Oprah Winfrey. Both Erivo and Grande capture different market shares. Grande draws the attention of pop fans from all across the world and Erivo corners the Broadway market, creating a powerful buzz of the performance world. 

Wicked the movie will also feature performances from Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, and Peter Dinklage of Game of Thrones as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.  Stephen Schwartz, the man behind Wicked’s original music and lyrics, is listed as a producer.

Although the Broadway recording has been around for decades, the Wicked Movie soundtrack has yet to debut, nor has it announced a release date. The soundtrack was recorded during 2022 and 2023 at Sky Studios in London, produced by Republic Records, and was made available to pre-save on May 16th, 2024. Although much of the soundtrack comes straight from the original work, it’s rumored to feature new music, particularly for part two of the movie franchise.
