Lawrence Lui dips into ambient techno with first 2024 single, M83 IDM OST MHZ
New York-based producer Lawrence Lui has released his first single of 2024.
To celebrate AAPI month, electronic music creative Lawrence Lui shares his first single of 2024 with an ambient techno track that transcends genres. The New York-based producer has shared “M83 IDM OST MHZ,” whose title pays homage to several musical references and abbreviations.
Dissecting the name, there’s M83, which shares the name with the French dream-pop band most notable for 2011’s “Midnight City.” The acronym IDM means “intelligent dance music,” originating from the 90s as a musical experimental exploration rather than a defined genre.
OST stands for “original soundtrack,” which is the album accompaniment that scores films. The final abbreviation MHZ refers to megahertz, which is a measurement of frequencies. Combining all these elements together gives a pretty good indication that the Lui-produced single is going to be eclectic.
“M83 IDM OST MHZ” rides ambiguous sonic waves into the world of ambient techno, drawing from otherworldly influences. The thumping baseline brings warehouse vibes, making it a track that transcends all definitions of what a genre really is. The track name is a puzzle in itself, and the song is the riddle that further perplexes the listener’s experience.
Fans of Daniel Avery, who hit the Europe music festival circuit last year with Wide Awake Festival and Connect Festival, will be sure to enjoy Lui’s unique new track. Lui’s music is also recommended for those who like Oneohtrix Point Never, who played at this past Coachella.
Lawrence Lui’s debut 2017 EP ‘Retroism’ has garnered over 5 million streams and his sophomoric follow-up ‘The Genius of Time’ then solidified his work as a creative musical innovator. Now, his avant-garde and unparalleled musical endeavors like “M83 IDM OST MHZ” will make him stand out in a sea of other like-minded artists.
