Throwback to the moment when deadmau5 discovered Chris James for The Veldt

One of the best collaboration stories for the hit song “The Veldt” by Deadmau5 and Chris James has yet again resurfaced.

In the history of electronic dance music, few stories have remained an inspiration throughout the years. Or as serendipitous and heartwarming as the discovery of Chris James for Deadmau5’s iconic track “The Veldt.” This story has always been a huge moment for both artists. So, it makes sense it recently resurfaced on Reddit.  Certainly, in this world, it is a perfect example of creativity and the digital age.

The story begins on March 20, 2012. Deadmau5, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, was live-streaming his production process for a new track. The track we all know today acquired inspiration from Ray Bradbury’s short story, “The Veldt.” The song was initially created during a 22-hour live-streaming session. Although the instrumental was already hauntingly beautiful, it was evident that something was missing. Chris James, an aspiring singer-songwriter at the time, was watching the stream.

Afterward, something incredible happened. Deadmau5, known for his discerning ear and high standards, stumbled upon James’ vocal performance through a Twitter post by the vocalist. During the stream, you see the artist’s face light up with disbelief. The synergy between the instrumental and James’ voice was undeniable. While the live stream, Deadmau5 expressed his amazement, noting Chris James “f***ing nailed it”.

The magic continued as Deadmau5 invited Chris James to officially record the vocals for “The Veldt.” The track was released in 2012 to widespread acclaim and became a defining song of that year, showcasing the power of spontaneous collaboration. On April 20, 2012, the artist and Ultra Records uploaded the eight-minute-plus version of the song onto their YouTube channels, with the radio edit being uploaded onto Ultra Records’ channel on May 7, 2012. Then on May 8th, both versions of the song were released.
