Why has Ibiza banned Alcohol Sales past 9 pm for 2024?

A tale as old as times, anti-tourism laws have been expanded as the 2024 Summer Ibiza season starts rolling in.

Since 2020, the Balearic government of Spain has created laws that prohibit the organization of pub crawls, open bars, and happy hours during peak tourism summer season. Fast forward four years later, The Balearic Islands of Spain will be doubling down on its drinking laws involving alcohol purchase and consumption.

Spain is expanding this legislation due to “excessive tourism”. Notably, this will help improve the quality of tourism and the well-being of residents.

Starting May 11, Spain will start implementing the expanded law in popular areas such as Ibiza and Majorca. Specifically, these regions include San Antonio in Ibiza. As well as popular areas in Majorca such as Llucmajor, Playa de Palma, and Magaluf. This will be regulated for the next five years.

Moreover, Spain’s anti-tourism laws will be extended to party boats up to one nautical mile (1.85km) off the coast. Expansions to the anti-tourism laws include no drinking on the street except for terrace bars, restaurants, and legally authorized areas. If it is not common sense enough, jumping from hotel balconies into swimming pools, or also known as “balconing”, will be banned as it has led to several deaths and a multitude of injuries.

There will be a total ban on selling alcohol between 9:30 pm and 8 am. If a tourist were to be caught disobeying the rules, fines of up to €3000 ($3,258) can be faced. In addition, businesses found selling alcohol within restricted times could face up to £500,000 in fines.

There is not much noise on the news on social media. When there is a will, there is a way! Certainly, the fun is never really over. In contrast, alcohol consumers such as @pj_thomas on Twitter are questioning if Ibiza plans this summer are cancelled due to the news.

Yoooo, the homies call me Marz. I am a multidimensional Piscean Latina fairy from Miami-Dade County (no, not Florida). Electronic music has allowed me to appreciate the profound beauty that can be found in finding peace within the chaos. Artists such as Rezz, Skrillex, John Summit, Michael Bibi, and Amtrac blend the two seamlessly, creating a harmonious balance that resonates with me whenever I am on the dancefloor. When I am writing about electronic music, I feel this same balance of peace and chaos moving through me - starting in my hips, filling my heart, and radiating out from my soul. The power of music has brought me to this exact moment, and I only desire that you feel the warmth of the sun through my words.
