Flowdan Makes History as First Grime MC to Win Grammy Award
Flowdan has impressively blossomed from the underground in 2023 as the first Grime MC to get a Grammy Award.
The UK artist Flowdan, known for his highly recognizable voice, is the first Grime MC to receive a Grammy Award. He won the Grammy for his track with Fred Again.. and Skrillex – “Rumble” – which he does the vocals for. “Rumble” won the ‘Best Dance or Electronic Recording’ category.
When ”Rumble” was released in January 2023, it instantly gained traction as it was one of the first songs Skrillex released as part of his comeback to the music industry. The track perfectly showcases the mastery acquired by Flowdan, Skrillex, and Fred again… “Rumble’ continued to be one of the hottest tracks of the year, all year long.Â
Flowdan made a celebration post with BBC Radio 1Xtra on Instagram following winning the Grammy award. The post includes a video of him freestyling and the caption says, “GRAMMY-DAN.” People in the comments were in awe over his raps/success and said, “This freestyle is a victory lap, especially over that beat” and “Proud bro it’s your time.” He also posted on Facebook, “I just won a Grammy.”
MC stands for a master of ceremonies and focuses more on live performances, freestyling, and interaction with a crowd. They also focus on influence and can direct a gig by moving the crowd with their rhymes and flows. Grime music is a sub-style of hip hop that started in the UK in the early 2000s.
Flowdan had his big breakthrough into mainstream music in 2023 with “Rumble” along with “Baddadan” with IRAH, Trigga, and Takura which made it to the UK top five. He was known for being an underground MC Grime for years but quickly rose to fame in a short period.
The Grime MC worked with Skrillex numerous times last year. He also released “Pepper” with Skrillex and Lil Baby in late 2023 and “Badders” with Skrillex, PEEKABOO, and G-Rex in August. “Badders” was record label OWSLA’s first release in three years. Flowdan is also featured in the popular Zeds Dead and Subtronicis track, “Gassed Up.”
