Dirtybird Records: Inside the Tech-Funk House Label Run by Claude VonStroke
Claude VonStroke announces plans to focus on his solo project, Barclay Crenshaw ahead of 2024 tour.
Dirtybird Records is an independent electronic music record label founded by Claude VonStroke, also known as Barclay Crenshaw, in 2005. The label has played a significant role in the development and popularization of a subgenre of electronic dance music (EDM) known as “tech house” or “dirtybird style.” The sound is characterized by its funky basslines, quirky samples, and a playful, offbeat vibe. VonStroke’s influence extended beyond his role as a label founder to become a prominent DJ and producer in the electronic music scene. His success includes winning a Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical in 2017 for his remix of “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey.
Barclay Crenshaw, born in 1971, adopted the stage name Claude VonStroke as a persona for his musical endeavors. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and later moved to Los Angeles. Before venturing into the world of music production and DJing. As many Dirtybird fans know, VonStroke has been juggling running a label, a clothing line, and his music projects. Additionally, he’s been releasing music and touring under his two aliases, his house moniker Claude VonStroke and his house bass and birth name, Barclay Crenshaw. Recently, VonStroke took to Instagram to give an update to his fans on where he’d like to focus his time and energy going forward.
He recently posted the following – “As you may have heard I’m going on hiatus as Claude VonStroke next year. I’m so excited to focus on my birth name project, Barclay Crenshaw. Welcome to any new followers who have come over from the VonStroke or Dirtybird pages. A new bass era begins!” To honor his dedication to Barclay Crenshaw he plans on embarking on a tour in 2024. Crenshaw’s tour includes stops in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Phoenix, and more cities.
Barclay Crenshaw adopted the alias as a nod to the combination of his middle name and a childhood drawing. As Barclay Crenshaw, he explores different musical styles, often delving into hip-hop and downtempo beats. The use of multiple aliases allows Crenshaw to express different facets of his musical creativity. In addition to his tour, Crenshaw is working on a new album titled ‘Open Channel’. The album pays homage to his father, who used a CB radio in his car when Crenshaw was a child.
