Coming off of a massive year in 2022 that saw album releases from label heavyweights Jason Ross, Kill the Noise, Trivecta, and the boss himself Seven Lions, all eyes were on Ophelia Records in 2023. The renowned label has lived up to the hype this year with a mix of old favorites and new faces delivering their distinctive collection of music from the worlds of dubstep, melodic bass, trance, and more.

Check out our selections for the top five Ophelia releases of 2023 below, in order of release date.

Seven Lions – ‘Beyond the Veil’ Deluxe (“Alive” and “Brightest Light”)

While Seven Lions released his masterpiece debut album in late 2022, he tacked on two more gems with the deluxe version in early 2023. “Alive” recruits familiar collaborator Opposite the Other for a euphoric love song that would be blissful to experience at a summer festival mainstage. In “Brightest Light,” Dotter wonders whether lost love is too far gone over two uniquely powerful drops.

Trivecta and Caster – “Leviathan”

It may be cliche to refer to a song as a journey, but it’s difficult to find a more appropriate word for “Leviathan.” The listener is whipped through a dark underworld of vaguely pirate-themed psytrance and dubstep that fits the single artwork to a tee. Hopefully, the success of this track will lead to more Ophelia releases in 2024 for Caster, a truly unique up-and-coming artist.

Kill The Noise – ‘Hollow World’

Label veteran Kill The Noise followed 2022’s ‘Embrace’ with another heater in 2023 with ‘Hollow World’. Heavy dubstep is well-represented on this one in songs like “Ultraviolent” with Shadow Cliq and “Broken Panes” with Vulgatron and PAV4N, as is his melodic side in songs like “Afraid Of The Dark” with Karra and “Give Out” with the iconic HALIENE. Each listen-through of this album brings a different song or moment to the surface of the listener’s attention as they weave their way through an array of different sounds and song structures.

Au5 – ‘Bridges Between’

Genre-melding producer Au5 joined the Ophelia family in 2023 with a wide-ranging album that feels right at home on the label. Meticulous melodic soundscapes and heavenly vocals are intercut with hard-hitting dubstep and elements from several subgenres to tell an emotional story in a truly captivating way. The highlights include “Paradise” with HA!L, “What You’ve Done” with DNAKM, and “Waiting” with Ophelia fan-favorites Crystal Skies.

Seven Lions and Jason Ross – “Darkness” feat. GG Magree

Ophelia’s Batman and Robin saved some of their best stuff for last this year with the anthemic crowd-pleaser “Darkness.” GG Magree, who appeared twice on Seven Lions’ ‘Beyond The Veil,’ provides the ethereal vocals on this energizing progressive house and trance track that begs to be played out to a big festival crowd. Add this one to the long list of banger collaborations between these two (“Higher Love,” “Ocean,” “See You Again,” and so on), with many more sure to come.
