Daft Punk Declines Offer to Perform at 2024 Olympics in Paris
It has been revealed that Daft Punk was given an offer to perform at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony but has declined.
The idea of the French duo opening the Olympics came about when the director of the ceremonies, Thomas Jolly, mentioned it on a radio show. He explained that when curating the production, he thought about the impact that Daft Punk has had on the French house music movement. A representative for Daft Punk has made a statement, saying that it is, “…just a rumor and not true.”
Since the announcement that Daft Punk has declined to perform at the 2024 Olympics, Jolly apologized to the community. He has acknowledged that he spoke too soon and raised fans’ hopes. Another French news outlet spoke to Jolly, who said that he and Daft Punk have talked and that “If they decide the day before, we will find a place for them.”
The 2024 Summer Olympics are being held in Paris and the event’s opening and closing ceremonies are highly anticipated. The first DJ to open the Olympics was Tiësto in 2004. Many, including Jolly, realized that Daft Punk reuniting in their home city would be monumental.
After making house music that pulled from seemingly every genre for 28 years, Daft Punk split up in early 2021. The iconic electronic music producers left fans heartbroken. This year, the producers celebrated the 10th anniversary of ‘Random Access Memories,’ an album that still impacts electronic music today.
The Paris 2024 Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11. The ceremony is set to be the largest of the Olympics. Theatre, opera, dance, and circus will take over the streets, but performers are still under wraps.
Although Daft Punk is not performing at the Olympics, fans can reminisce on the duo with their series, ‘Memory Tapes.’ The series includes interviews with artists featured on ‘Random Access Memories.’ They are also dropping the “Drumless Edition” of the album, so keep an eye on their latest releases.
