Chet Porter gOT honest and admitted that new producers should not be fooled by big numbers when starting their careers.

Indie-inspired DJ Chet Porter sat down for an interview with the podcast All This Noise Pod and opened up about some truths that new producers should consider when starting to advance in the music industry. He gave advice that he would want to hear when in that position.

Chet Porter was asked: “For you, what are some positives you have found from working with a label when putting together something like an album.” He responded: “Nothing. There is no positive. If I could go back in time or I’m a younger artist, or like I’m giving advice.”

He continued on to advise new producers to: “just don’t sign to a label.” He explained it’s because the labels can be like “Oh we gave you money” but you have if you factor in giving 10 percent to management, a lawyer’s fees, business manager splits, and taxes.

Chet Porter said that is it important to consider that you are also supposed to use that money to pay for advances for things to make the records like buying plug-ins or if you need a new computer. He then emphasized that after breaking it down, with the amount of time spent and how it is supposed to keep you living, it is like below minimum wage.

The main point that he is trying to make is that you should not be fooled by some big number on a piece of paper. Along with that if you want to grow as an artist and you’re a little electronic guy it would be good to consider working with a label that is intended to guide you in a realistic direction.

Lastly, Chet Porter recommended that if you are really trying to grow as an artist with a label you should go to an artist-run label. He then recommended labels like San Holo’s label or Odezsa’s label. Ending his advice with “that’s the place for growth.”
