Before her headlining set, Alison Wonderland celebrates plur By Making Kandi With Her Fans.
Following her headlining set at Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival in Fort Worth, Texas, Alison Wonderland turned to Instagram to share videos of her making and trading kandi with fans. She also shared a couple of clips from her electrifying DJ performance, leaving everyone who wasn’t in attendance with serious FOMO.
Kandi is quintessential to rave culture, especially at festivals. Kandi are brightly colored beaded bracelets full of playful words, just like the ones many of us made with our friends at summer camp at a young age. Now as adult ravers, it’s common to give them away and trade them with others at a show or festival to celebrate PLUR culture, which stands for peace, love, unity, and respect.
But Kandi isn’t just for festivalgoers, kandi can also be significant and meaningful for artists as well! In Alison Wonderland’s most recent Instagram post, she shares a video of her creating her own kandi and of one of her fans gifting her one as well. She exclaims, “I’m going to wear it on stage tonight… oh my god, I love it!”
In the subsequent videos, still wearing her gifted kandi bracelet, Alison Wonderland takes us to the vintage T-shirt thrift store that was set up outside of her trailer by Vintage Hoss. She also provides her followers with a backstage view of iconic parts of her set featuring tracks like her song with MEMBA, “Fight or Flight,” her “Push Up” remix with Subtronics, GRiZ’ remix of John Summit and Haylas “Where You Are,” and EMWA’s “Back at It.”
Nowadays, Shaq is recognized for more than just his basketball career. He rebranded himself as DJ Diesel, and in 2015, he made his DJ debut at Tomorrowland. Since then, Shaq has played festivals all over the world and has fallen in love with bass music. Now, he’s back on his fans’ radar with the first-ever Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival. In addition to headliner Alison Wonderland, Shaq curated the festival’s lineup with some of his favorite bass acts like Sullivan King, Crankdat, Kai Waichi, and LAYZ to keep things booming throughout the entirety of the event.
Alison Wonderland’s actions during Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival truly showcased how genuine and loving she is deep down. It’s refreshing to witness an artist of her caliber making and trading kandi just like the rest of us. We love to see PLUR culture in action by such an influential artist.
