Exron Exclusive Interview: Mary Droppinz
Shortly before her intimate yet packed-out set with VNSSA at Elsewhere Brooklyn, Exron Music met up with Mary Droppinz for a one-on-one. With her edgy and complex sound profile, Droppinz (a.k.a. Alyssa Johnson) is paving the way for women in breakbeats and electronic music generally. Lending valuable insights and heartfelt anecdotes about her professional journey, Mary Droppinz gave us an exclusive sneak peek into her creative genius.
Growing up in idyllic Omaha, Nebraska, Mary picked up an ear for music from her drummer father and took up the piano soon thereafter. Droppinz continued cultivating her creative skills in L.A., impressively doing social media and marketing for Desert Hearts. And as the pandemic hit, she seized the opportunity to attend music production school at IO Academy Hollywood.
Boasting show collaborations with names such as John Summit and Rezz, Mary Droppinz has surely established herself as a genre-bender. Mary certainly finds comfort in breakbeats thanks to the familiar sounds from childhood. That being said, Droppinz often dabbles in house music and specifically named LP Giobbi as a major source of inspiration.
As she continues carving her own niche, Droppinz is also offering classes and playing guest mixes for Femme House. And from Seismic Dance Event to Lightning in a Bottle, the opportunities just keep getting bigger and bigger. Needless to say, she will continue to be a radiant guiding force for female artists across the industry.
With an electric appearance set for Electric Zoo later this month, NYC is lucky to have Droppinz back in all her glory. Despite losing her beloved hydroflask to the depths of the Brooklyn vintage shops, we’reee nonetheless honored she still finds solace in our concrete jungle. From angel numbers to personal pastimes, Mary Droppinz was an open book and am absolute gem throughout our chat.
