The Grammy’s Adds New ‘Dance Pop’ Category to 66th Annual Awards
The Academy intends to stay aligned with the evolving musical landscape by recognizing a broader array of artists in the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Known officially as the 66th anniversary of the GRAMMY Awards, the 2024 Grammy Recording Academy will acknowledge “Dance Pop Recording” as a new category. This new category will join two existing categories for dance music: “Best Dance/Electronic Recording and Best Dance/Electronic Album.”
The Recording Academy of the GRAMMY Awards will recognize tracks and singles eligible for the nomination that features an uptempo pop arrangement of danceable rhythmic beats and powerful electronic-based instruments. It is stated on the official Grammy website that the Academy also recognizes dance remixes as ineligible for the “Dance Pop Recording” category, but may only be entered in the “Best Remixed Recording Category”.
Along with this new dance music category, two other new categories are set for the 2024 Grammy Awards: “Best African Music Performance” and “Best Alternative Jazz Album.” Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Grammy Recording Academy, intends that these three new categories will acknowledge and appreciate a broader array of artists while exposing a wider range of music to fans worldwide.
This announcement comes as news after the controversy of the 2023 Grammy Award when Beyonce’s “Break My Soul” was placed in the existing category “Best Dance/Electronic Recording” with a sweeping win, beating renowned nominees of the electronic dance community such as Diplo, Rüfüs du Sol, Bonobo, and Odesza. Harvey Mason Jr. states that “these changes reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape”.
Fans are going wild in the Instagram and Twitter comments as they make their guesses on who will be nominated for a Grammy award this year for the brand-new category. Suggestions such as Dua Lipa, Lizzo, BTS, Kim Petras, Kylie Minogue, Jessie Ware, Katy Perry, and Aniita were made.
To benefit the awards process and provide flexibility throughout Grammy Season with nominations announcements and telecast bookings, the eligibility deadline for artists to submit themselves for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards has been extended to Friday, September 15, 2023.
