Slushii Discusses Overcoming Mental Health Scare Last Year

The American DJ and music producer took to Twitter to open up about his struggles with mental health and addiction.

There are two things that make the world of electronic music so great: the music itself, of course, and the community that comes with it. As the stigma around mental health continues to lessen and people feel more inclined to share their own experiences and stories in general, the same is happening in the EDM community.

Julian Michael Scanlan, better known as Slushii, is one such electronic artist that recently took to Twitter to discuss his own journey with mental health. The Los Angeles-based producer tweeted on June 5, “The last year of my life has been a lot; overdosed and thankfully i survived… so grateful to god to be here and to those that supported me during my darkest hours finally in a really good mental head space and want to let u all know what’s been going on lately love u.”

Fans and friends immediately took to the comments to show their support for the artist and commend his bravery for opening up about a sensitive topic. “Didn’t know this but I’m sorry life’s given you such a rough time,” one user responded. “Glad hearing your head is in a better place now though. Always remember that you’re irreplaceable and keep that mental health in check. It may feel dark but you’re not alone in this world.”

“love you too man please take care!” Another user wrote. “If you ever get back to that dark place take things slowly! I’m super proud of you for reaching out for help it’s not always easy! I’m so grateful you’re okay honestly! You are like the male role model I never had so love seeing you do your best!”

Slushii is perhaps best known for the support he’s garnered from massive players in the electronic music industry such as Tiêsto, Steve Aoki, and Skrillex. With hit songs like ‘LUV U NEED U’ and ‘All I Need’ (the latter of which has become a viral video game meme), there’s no doubt that Slushii is an artist on the rise and certainly, one to watch.

However, talent and support don’t exempt one from mental health crises. In 2022, Slushii was not able to perform at Anime Expo due to ongoing mental health concerns. The artist has also opened up about how his Asperger’s Syndrome diagnosis caused him to be bullied growing up and impacted the way he socialized with others.

Slushii isn’t the only member of the electronic music community opening up about mental health. Other artists like Ashe, DJ Vanic, Luca Lush, and San Holo have discussed their own personal journeys on social media, through their music, and by taking time off touring. As these artists remind us, you’re never alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, call the national mental health hotline at (866) 903 3787.
