Diplo Defends Beyoncé’s Grammy Win with Homage to Producers Behind Renaissance Album
Diplo clarifies his statement made at the Grammy Awards during Beyoncé’s record-breaking win.
Speculation surrounding a video of Diplo’s reaction to Beyoncé’s win at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards has been cleared up by the producer himself. Beyoncé made history with her 32nd win for “Best Dance/Electronic Album” for her work on Renaissance, which caused a stir on EDM Twitter with claims that she was not deserving of the title over other nominees including Diplo, Rufus du Sol, Bonobo, and Odesza.
Diplo responded to allegations that he was heard saying “they bought that” in reference to Beyoncé’s win in a video clip that was widely shared on social media. He then shared the clip on Instagram, adding subtitles that read, “I’m glad to be part of this,” and included a caption in which he praised Beyoncé, saying she deserved the win.
In a lengthy caption, he shows his love for the people who helped shaped his career. He explains that he has plaid in a multitude of places ranging from the slums of Rio to posh clubs in Ibiza, but “it’s the music that had united the world during my lifetime and I’m glad to just be one part of it”.

He continues to praise Beyoncé explaining it’s ” important to understand was that her intention was 100%. She did the work found the real producers and she made classics … so she deserves her flowers.” Diplo also emphasized that this was the first time the Best Dance/Electronic Music Album category was ever televised at a Grammy Awards ceremony. This is a huge milestone because it shows how mainstream media is now more accepting and celebrating musical creators in this space.
Diplo released his Grammy-nominated, self-titled album last year amidst court cases related to allegations of sexual battery, which he denied. In September, he won a ruling against his accuser, who was found to have violated dual restraining orders against each other.
