Pierce Fulton’s musical partner Gordon Huntley of Leaving Laurel has revealed a brand new track off record label Anjunadeep. After Pierce’s untimely death in 2021, the future of Leaving Laurel fell into limbo. The side project was propagated at the end of 2019, through the bond fused by Pierce and Gordon. Consequently, the following year in January they released their first creation, “sometimes it’s scary but it’s still just you and me/Needle Little, Want Less.”
Most recently Gordon posted on Leaving Laurel’s Instagram to share some news. “I wasn’t sure there was ever going to be any more Leaving Laurel music,” the post began. Considering the last post on the account was in June 2022. He continues, “Pierce passed away nearly two years ago, and at the time it felt like an abrupt fade to black.” When together they released two EPs and a handful of singles.
Releasing their self-titled debut LP four months after Pierce’s passing. The 11-track album was dedicated to his memory. “Our first LP together captured the moment when we were living together in Laurel Canyon, freely creating music with no predefined agenda,” the post proceeded. Prior to his death, Pierce had been privately dealing with a heavy depression for the past few years. He concealed this side of himself from his closest friends.
Gordon went on “We parted ways from that Californian oasis, but we never stopped making music together.” Even though the pandemic parted the duo they continued working virtually. “Leading up to the release of that record, we had already begun working on new material in our usual outpouring of creativity” the caption read on. Even though things were going well, no one could predict what was to come next.
The caption carried on, “But then that terrible day came, and suddenly none of this felt important.” On April 19th, 2021, at the age of 28 Pierce Fulton passed away. A few days later on May 3rd his older brother, Griffin, shared the heartbreaking news. The post dug deeper “After quite a lot of time processing what had happened, I began digging through the pieces of what was left unfinished.”
As the post goes on to explain that old recordings and notes Pierce left were found which ignited inspiration. Gordon realized the vision “to try to combine two of his short demos into one.” As a result, he developed Leaving Laurel’s newest track. The post concluded, “And that became ‘the family we find’.” The single was released last month on January 31st. The mark friendship leaves is a beautiful sight.
