Skrillex Reveals the Truth Behind Why he “Fell Off” From EDM Scene
On his 35th birthday, Skrillex opened up about his personal struggles that affected his music career last year.
Like many other ravers, the life-changing song that busted open the gates of the electronic world was Skrillex’s “Dirty Monsters and Nice Sprites”. His music was among some of the first notable EDM songs to hit mainstream media in the 2010s.
People’s love for Skrillex is not only because of his music, but also the nostalgia reminding many of our early “PLUR” days. That’s why people were so devastated when he canceled his Sunset Music Festival and Movement Festival performances last year.
However, on his 35th birthday, Skrillex opened up on Twitter to share the real reason behind his absence. He first tweeted, “Had the toughest year of my life in 22, as did so many others. I literally found myself with no drive and purpose for the first time in my life”.
He disclosed that the cause of this hardship was because of his mother’s passing that happened a few years ago. “I never ever coped with it … I drank the pain away and kept going”. Skrillex followed up with another tweet explaining, “People ask why “I’ve been gone” or “fell off”, rightfully so. Like I said, 22’ was sort of my tipping point, I had to put everything on ice, especially my projects/career”.
He revealed the truth behind his absence wasn’t because he was working on his albums, but rather, “It was because I was working on myself”. Though this hiatus is now over and Skrillex claims, “For the first time in 4-5 years I’ve found a new sense of peace. It took so much work and sacrifice to get here.”
Skrillex has been welcomed back into the scene with open arms and has made a huge resurgence after Fred Again… played their track, “Rumble” featuring Flowdan in his London Boiler Room set. This track shook the electronic community and on January 18th, Skrillex released another banger “Leave Me Like This” featuring Bobby Raps.
This year, Skrillex is back in full force featuring on multiple lineups and finishing up his highly anticipated album. We’ve waited eight years for this new body of work and we cannot wait to see what else he’s been cooking up.
