EDM Community Reacts to Beyoncé’s Dance/Electronic GRAMMY Nominations

Some EDM fans were surprised to learn that Beyoncé had been nominated for a GRAMMY in the dance/electronic category, while others celebrated the news as a massive win for the dance music community.

The 65th GRAMMY Awards will take place in Los Angeles on February 5th, 2023. After the nominations were shared this week, it became apparent Beyoncé has been nominated for two GRAMMYs in the dance music realm, the Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Break My Soul” and the Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for ‘Rennaissance.’ The singer was also nominated for numerous other GRAMMYs in various categories, including Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year, and a couple in the R&B category.

Learning that pop music superstar Beyoncé was nominated for a dance/electronic GRAMMY might not have been on EDM fans’ bingo cards for 2022. However, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since her album ‘Renaissance’ was produced with the help of prominent figures in the dance music scene, including Honey Dijon and Skrillex.

The news of the GRAMMY nomination of course came with mixed reactions from music fans. One person tweeted, “If Beyoncé wins that electronic/dance Grammy then that would be huge slap in the face to the people who actually produce their music.” Another said, “im sorry why is Beyoncé Grammy nominated for best dance/electronic music album next to fucking rufus du sol and Odesza.”

Despite the minor backlash, Beyoncé’s GRAMMY record is certainly impressive. She is the first female artist to receive the most GRAMMY nominations ever, and the first ever black woman to receive four Album Of The Year GRAMMY nominations as a lead artist.

Of course, plenty of fans are supportive of Beyoncé’s nomination. One tweet reads, “Grammys gave Beyoncé the Best Dance/Electronic Grammy nomination… GOOD #GRAMMYs.” Another person said, “Beyoncé is Grammy nominated for best dance/electronic ALBUM. She is so fuckin iconic it’s insane.”

Regardless of anyone’s opinion on the nominations, Beyoncé has made music history in many ways this week. Stay tuned this February to find out who the winners are!

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!

What's your reaction?
