Inside the “Sexual Assault” Allegations Against Sky Suite and Mean Mug Music

Mean Mug Music and Sky Suite are under fire following sexual assault allegations.

Sky Suite is a DJ and producer that has been represented by Mean Mug Music, an Ann Arbor-based music collective. According to the company’s SoundCloud profile, more specifically defined as a “talent agency, digital record label, and community-based underground music collective.”

This past week, drama on EDM Twitter unfolded as a slew of allegations were made against Sky Suite and Mean Mug Music. At least one woman alluded to a sexual assault that was allegedly perpetrated by Sky Suite. She tweeted, “just gonna leave it at im happy to not be involved w people that seemed like they cared about my sexual assault while also saying i shouldnt post about it when i asked. still supporting him [Sky Suite] after he was gone & telling someone i was dating that i was just gonna say he r*ped me too.”

According to a statement made by Wubaholics, another music collective that had represented the artist, “There have been some very serious allegations made against an artist [Sky Suite] we work with that date back to before we started managing them.” Wubaholics continued by stating they would no longer be representing the artist, effective immediately. Fans seemed to be satisfied by the response Wubaholics offered.

Another dance music brand, Electric Hawk, has also publicly denounced its affiliation with Sky Suite. Electric Hawk said, “We’re moving to terminate our label release agreement with Sky Suite who was a featured artist on our In Unity compilation album.” They went on to share plans to donate their portions of the royalties to an organization that supports survivors of sexual assault.

However, the same is not true about Mean Mug Music, another company that had close ties to the artist. According to one Twitter user, “TLDR Mean Mug was fully aware Sky Suite sexually assaulted and kept quiet/continued to support him.”

Mean Mug Music released a statement about the allegations, starting off by saying “Mean Mug has in no way, shape, or form supported or covered up a sexual assault.” However, fans did not react well and the company continued to face backlash. One person said, “Tl;dr we [Mean Mug Music] didn’t think sexual assault was a big deal so we didn’t acknowledge it.” Another said, “That mean mug statement was easily the worst one I’ve ever read. Absolutely zero accountability whatsoever.”

Many artists and staff have announced their departure from the label. One Twitter user said, “to cap off this mean mug debacle, numerous artists mentioned dissolving their contracts in the slack group. Almost a full 18 hours later, and none of them have heard from staff.” The user followed up with “keep in mind, these same people ghosting these artists are the ones who wouldn’t remove sky suite from their roster after he R*PED SOMEONE because of “contracts” and ‘how the industry works.”

It’s also been alleged by a Twitter user that Mean Mug Music is “threatening the girls who spoke out.” At this point in time, Sky Suite’s SoundCloud profile is inactive, and his social media profiles have been set to private. Mean Mug Music’s website is currently inactive.

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!

What's your reaction?
