Gordo Responds to Ministry of Sound Incident

Gordo makes an official statement after the EDM community drags him on social media for an incident that occurred at Ministry of Sound in London.

Over the weekend, producer and DJ Gordo (formally Carnage) played a massive headlining set at Ministry of Sound in London. The night went sour when two closing DJs, Waze and Essel, realized that neither of them would have the opportunity to play their set. Gordo allegedly played his scheduled set, and then “refused” to come off stage, completely cutting into Waze and Essel’s set times.

Essel, in particular, drew the attention of the dance music community after sharing how much confusion and hurt he felt after finding out he wouldn’t be playing the set he drove ten hours for. Not to mention, Essel noted that he has autism, which makes it more difficult for him to process sudden changes in plans like these. Essel apologized to his fans that also traveled far to watch him play early Sunday morning.

The second artist that had their set cut, Waze, also had some strong opinions about what went down that night. He said, “I’m (in) over a decade of playing I’ve honestly never seen this level of entitlement or arrogance and I’ve DJed with way bigger (and better) artists.”

To no surprise, the EDM community dragged Gordo on social media for his behavior at Ministry of Sound that night. Artists and (former) fans alike are bashing Gordo with memes on social media, and someone even updated the artist’s Wikipedia page to account for the incident.

Gordo explained that being a debut headlining set at one of the UK’s most iconic venues, his excitement coupled with an “obvious miscommunication” is the reason he stayed on stage all night, despite two closing acts scheduled to perform after him. To close out his statement, he offered to add Waze and Essel as support for future shows, although, at this time, it’s unclear if they’ve accepted his offer.

Many artists and fans have come to Gordo’s support after he issued this statement. However, it seems some are not buying the DJ’s explanation and continue to rip him apart on social media. @btrflyofficial on Twitter says, “Bro how could you say you’ve been DJing for a long time AND pretend to be oblivious to how shows work all in the same sentence. This “apology” is pathetic.”

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!

What's your reaction?
