deadmau5 Asks Crowd in Kansas to Sing Happy Birthday to His Assistant
As a birthday gift, deadmau5 extends a sweet gesture to his assistant Katie.
Industry mogul deadmau5 – also known as Joel Zimmerman, the owner and founder of mau5trap radio and mau5trap the record label – is not a sap, simp, or saint. He’s not one for eloquent speeches and frills, nor is he one to plan elaborate birthday shebangs for team members. However, as social media has proven, the DJ can be thoughtful, kind, and spontaneous. For his assistant’s birthday last week, deadmau5 halted his performance to announce some fun, celebratory news.
For his assistant’s birthday last week, deadmau5 halted his performance to announce some fun, celebratory news. As deadmau5 took to the stage, he began his proclamation remorsefully. “Alright, this is how cheap I am: So it’s my assistant’s birthday and I didn’t get her shit.” At first, the crowd cheered before mentally processing the statement and switching to cacophonous boos and pejorative jeering.
Barreling through the boos, deadmau5 continued his announcement. “Without Katie, there is nothing else. I can’t do shit. We’re going to sing her happy birthday.” Like a true maestro, deadmu5 began leading the crowd through a motley chorus of happy birthdays. Upon its conclusion, deadmau5 turned back to the camera to yell one final, “Happy birthday, Katie. Love you,” into the microphone before exiting the stage.
The DJ posted the video to his Instagram feed and elaborated further. “This is the best I got,” deadmau5 captioned the video, tagging the assistant, a redhead named Katie. Katie commented back, “I mean this is pretty great,” with a heart emoji.
Although deadmau5 claimed to have gotten nothing for his assistant Katie other than the video singing happy birthday, social media begged to differ. Both Katie and deadumau5 posted pictures from what looked to be a medieval-themed party. A low-key birthday party, perhaps? Who’s to say?!
