Kaivon Hopes To Aid Your Spiritual Awakening With Debut Album ‘Awakening’ [INTERVIEW]
Kaivon is releasing his debut album ‘Awakening’ after going through a spiritual awakening himself.
My conversation with Kaivon about the album ‘Awakening’ started with major technical difficulties. Typical Google Meet issues. Some moments he couldn’t see me, nor I him. At one point, the audio cut out, and he couldn’t hear me at all. But, the whole time, Kaivon was patient and welcoming, and we both ended up finding the inconvenience rather funny.
Once the technology got on our side, I was greeted with his warm personality, radiant smile, and amazing hair. I also couldn’t help but notice his ‘Batman Returns’ shirt taking up the lower half of the screen and the perfectly sun-lit room behind him.
Our conversation began by discussing the inspiration behind his upcoming album ‘Awakening.’ Part of the reason he sought to create the album was his manager suggesting to him that it was time. After years of releasing single after single, the logical next step was a full album to showcase his art.
Although skeptical of creating an album at first, his attitude changed when he started writing the first song in the collection, and everything just felt right. Once his outlooked changed, the rest of the album just flowed out of him organically, as he kept putting it.
It was really important to him that the album happen organically and that it wasn’t forced. He wanted his first album to truly be a reflection of his spiritual growth, awakening, and him as a whole.
Part of his spiritual growth and awakening happened started during Covid and after a bad night out.
Kaivon saying, “I drank and did drugs one night and came home feeling the most miserable I’ve ever felt in a long time and cried with my mom. I had felt this low before, but this time it felt different. This time somewhere inside me, I felt a feeling that I never wanted to feel again.”
He continued, “I’ve felt this feeling before and told myself ‘I’m never drinking and doing drugs again’ and then ended up drinking or using a week or day later. This time I felt so low, I meant it to myself to quit drinking/using. The comedown wasn’t worth the high for me anymore. I couldn’t feel what I felt that morning again, and that still inspires me to not drink today. Quitting drinking wasn’t hard, dealing with my emotions and mental health after was the real challenge.”
Part of the way he processed these emotions and part of the inspiration for his debut album was found in a self-help book, “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. The book taught him an important lesson he still holds to this day and something that was central to our conversation.
It was the realization that you are not your thoughts; you are the observer of your thoughts.
Once Kaivon internalized this message and fully understood it, he realized he was in complete control over his thoughts, emotions, and life.
Kaivon said he had read similar books to this before and ended up with no benefit. But with this book, it was different. He genuinely felt changed by the messages.
It was so different he sought approval to use a clip of Tolle speaking in one of the songs on ‘Awakening.’ Something he was very excited about.
Besides the audio clip of Tolle, ‘Awakening’ saw Kaivon venture into some new musical territories. While he still sticks to his bass-heavy roots, he is also exploring more trap sounds than he previously has.
Kaivon is also doing something new he hasn’t before with this album rollout–partnering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He will be collaborating with the organization across social media as well as having personnel from the organization at stops on his upcoming tour.
Obviously, this feat is a reflection of his personal battles with mental health and the empathy he has for others in similar situations.
The album is out August 12th across all streaming platforms, and his tour begins September 9th in Salt Lake City, Utah. We can only hope his fans leave this musical experience feeling just as awakened as Kaivon.
