Printworks Officially Set to Close Despite Petition to Save Iconic London Nightclub
Legendary London Nightclub, Printworks, will be closing its doors regardless of petition efforts to save one more dance.
Printworks publicly announces the closure of this beloved multi-purpose venue hot spot located in south London. Uniting fans since 2017, this 10,000-square meter industrial space has been a staple in the music community. The Southwark Council approved project plans on Monday, July 11th for the nightspots restoration, bestowed the Canada Water Masterplan.
In turn, Will Goody created a petition on change.org to encourage the plans for the restoration to cease, receiving over 10,00 signatures. He had this to say “During a time where more people are working from home than ever before, the last thing that is needed is more office space.”
The building however has a rich history dating back to 1873 initially constructed for the Withy Grove Printing House. With over 100 years of newspaper publications namely the Manchester Evening Chronicle and the Daily Mirror under the Harmsworth Quays Printing Plant. Nonetheless, in 1985, they closed the plant remaining unoccupied for over ten years.
After the 1996 bomb attack in Manchester City Centre, the notion of redevelopment was propelled for the Exchange Square area. Previously a haven for a massive printing factory, transformed into a destination nightclub for the musically inclined. Consequentially Printworks preserved the authentic historic features and printing presses to design a venue for a multitude of events.
The plan has been underway since last October with the property developer British Land submitting a proposal that month to Southwark Council. Recognized globally for its nightlife industry leads are concerned with a quarter of London nightclubs closing due to Covid-19.
Printworks has packed its walls with some of the most influential dance music artists counting Peggy Gou, Bicep, and The Chemical Brothers. Despite not knowing when the club will shut its doors, the new venue development has begun.
