The Hidden Gems of Electric Forest 2022
In addition to hosting one of the most fantastically diverse lineups in the electronic dance music spectrum, Electric Forest is filled with exciting and unique adventures for its 50,000 attendees. This year was no exception, as festival creators went above and beyond to create an entirely new and immersive experience for music fans. Below are our favorite hidden gems of Electric Forest 2022!
The Trading Post
Nestled in the heart of Sherwood Forest is the elusive Trading Post. As suggested by its name, The Trading post invites travelers from far and wide to exchange their prized possessions for something shiny and new. The multi-level rustic building is adorned with curios and knickknacks which give it its character, and patrons are invited to explore the establishment whether they have a trade-in hand or not.
To make a trade, simply eye out the item you want and approach one of the workers with the object you’re willing to trade. The person behind the counter will determine whether it’s fair trade or if you need to up your bargain.
The Trading Post is also famous for its pickles! Stop by the Trading Post for a fresh pickle or grab a shot of pickle juice from the barrel for a hangover must-have.
The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree is a famous Electric Forest tradition that patrons look forward to every year. As the tradition goes, you must leave something if you take something. The magic of the Giving Tree continues every year thanks to the generous and creative Electric Forest attendees.
The Giving Tree is in reference to the several trees-turned-art installations scattered throughout Sherwood Forest. Each tree is designed by a different artist, however, they all hold true to the giving culture of Electric Forest.
These landmarks truly embody the phrase, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” as there’s no limit to what objects you might find there. Stickers, memorabilia, candy, and clothing are just some of the items you would encounter at the Giving Tree.
Matchmaking at The Hangar
After making your way from camp, past the main stages, and into the forest, you find yourself on the North side of the festival where an old 1940’s style tented area creates the Hangar. Inside the two adjacent airplane hangars, you’ll find a plethora of eccentric activities, like the Captain’s Lounge secret speakeasy, Rosie the Riveter Recharge station for massages, The Barber Shop, and our personal favorite, The Matchmaking Station.
Inside, festival-goers fill out an application and later sit with 1940s-dressed relationship coaches for an in-depth interview. You then pose for a polaroid photo before submitting your application to the magic of the forest. After 24 hours you are allowed to return and collect your match, from where you can make the decision on contacting them. If your match turns into a friendship/relationship/soulmate or even simply a kindred forest connection, you can return to the Matching Making station to ring the bell and collect a prize.
The Brainery
The Brainery is a large tent located on Main Street where comedy shows and yoga/meditation practices take place. The spot hosts a variety of performances, but our favorite programming was the late-night demonstrations by comedians and actors. After leaving the gates of Electric Forest and heading back to your camp following a long day of dancing, attendees were welcomed to take a rest in The Brainery for a one-of-a-kind show.
The most memorable performance of Electric Forest 2022 was an actor who staged an avant-garde portrayal of metamorphosis, as he transformed from a caterpillar to a butterfly in front of a packed crowd in the late-night hours of the festival. After stealing food from innocent bystanders and breaking out of his cocoon, the performer emerged entirely naked save a small butterfly covering his privates. From there he swan-dived off the stage in a magnificent moment of Electric Forest mystery.
