Svdden Death Shares His Journey of Learning How to Breathe Fire

Svdden Death continually expands on the performance art elements of his shows and learned to fire breathe before his Forbidden Kingdom set.

Danny Howland aka Svdden Death is known for his unique tear-out sound and sub-wrecking basslines that altered the course of mainstream dubstep. Quickly cultivating a lane of his own, he is also equally known for his DJ alias VOYD.

Significantly opposite from Svdden Death sets, VOYD is about creating an art form beyond the music with huge theatrics. To get into character, Danny dresses in an elaborate moose head costume and does not speak on the mic when playing his sets.

Over the years the VOYD production has steadily grown, adding more out-of-the-box elements to give fans an amazing show. His scary visuals and demonic-like theme across the VOYD production are supplemented with things like Danny suspending himself in the air to appear that he’s levitating, holding shows in the caves of Tennessee, and most recently fire breathing.

In preparation for this year’s Svdden Death: Into the Inferno set at Forbidden Kingdom, Danny sought out a coach to learn how to fire breathe. It was only a month before his set when he first started to when he did it live on stage before 30,000 people.

During his first attempt Danny was terrified to burn his face off. By week three of training he was admittedly still scared, but practically nailed his technique a few days before the show.

Talking about his experience he said, “I was scared as fuck of swallowing the lamp oil or breathing in the fire but luckily I had an excellent teacher and was able to pull it off. Me and the team are constantly tryna find ways to add to the “performance” aspect of our shows and this one for sure was the most dangerous, but for me personally the most rewarding. As I get better I’m going to add it to shows more often (fire is cool).”
