Exron Exclusive Interview: Surf Mesa at Hangout Festival 2022

Surf Mesa made his debut at Hangout Festival 2022 after skyrocketing to fame after releasing TikTok sensation single “ily (i love you baby).”

For the 21-year-old producer, a career in the music industry has always been on the radar. After acquiring his first FL Studio copy by the time he was in third grade, Surf Mesa was quick to evolve into a creative mastermind.

With a focus on dreamy nostalgic electronic tracks, the young up and comer first channeled the need for escape during the lockdown of 2020. The purpose behind his project has always been “music for good feels” which he expertly portrayed through his breakout single “ily (i love you baby), a TikTok phenomena that hit viral fame.

Certified RIAA Platinum and nearing double Platinum, “ily” has amassed over three billion global streams and over five billion TikTok views. It’s no surprise that the single also hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and #2 on Top 40 radio.

With such amazing success, what’s even more impressive is how kind and humble he’s remained throughout the whirlwind. We were able to catch up with Surf Mesa while at Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where amid touring, his new single release “Marching Band” with Nitti Gritti, and a growing fandom worldwide, his character was what really stole the show.

In late May, Surf Mesa released his collaboration with dance music superstar Nitti Gritti, marking the first track the two have worked on together. The Latin-inspired single embodies both a festival vibe as well as Surf Mesa’s gentle touch, altogether a perfect mix of both artists.

Speaking on the release, the young DJ said: “Marching Band’ is one hell of a fun track. I’m so excited to share this one with the world as I’ve been teasing it for months in my sets. As live music has returned, I’ve had the chance to explore a sound that gives a new wave of energy. Nitti and I could not be more excited about this one.”
