Black Coffee and Rüfüs Du Sol Make History for Dance and Electronic Music
South African DJ Black Coffee and Australian modern rock group Rüfüs Du Sol make history and win Grammy Awards.
The 2022 Grammys were undoubtably an incredible showcase of all the world’s best and brightest musicians. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Doja Cat, to Chrissy Teagan and John Legend, to Justin Timberlake and Miley Cyrus, was in attendance and the party was jumping. And to top things off, both Black Coffee and Rüfüs Du Sol were the electronic dance musicians of the night with big wins.
Rüfüs Du Sol won Best Dance/Electronic Recording for their single “Alive,” an ethereal electronic rock track from their latest album. This was the third nomination and third win for the group, which took home Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording in 2020. Rüfüs Du Sol was up against some serious heavy hitters such as Bonobo, Caribou, James Blake, Tiësto, David Guetta, and Afrojack for their Grammy nomination. category In celebration of their big win, the boyband plans to tour more in their home country Australia, which would be a first for their post-covid era.
Black Coffee, also known as Nkosinathi Maphumulo, took home the most coveted award of all, the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for his seventh album “Subconsciously.” Black Coffee made history as the first African to ever win in this category. The 12-track LP went up against Major Lazer’s “Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded),” Illenium’s “Fallen Embers,” and Sylvan Esso’s “Free Love” albums, all strong competitors.
When accepting his award, Black Coffee expressed his gratitude for all those that impacted him throughout his journey. “I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and heal some souls and help people go through whatever they’re going through in life… I want to thank my fans and people who follow what I do all over the world, thank you so much for believing in me.”
