Exron Exclusive Interview: MYRNE
Singaporean producer and DJ, MYRNE is back with his second single, “Circles” off his forthcoming spring EP due in April. He continues to demonstrate his unique artistry in creating a delightful tune guaranteed to stay in your head. “Circles” offers a flicker of sensual euphoria and anthemic melodies, floating with themes of connectedness and a fleeting sense of time.
Created out of isolation during the pandemic, “Circles” is a track that displays MRYNE‘s ability to experiment with new ideas. He shares, “I really wanted to explore repetition and loop-based sampling in a song; I wanted to pay homage to old rave tools while adding a touch of modern-day songwriting”. Following the first single “What Can I Do“, the latest release provides a glimpse of what listeners can expect from the upcoming project – a sense of escapism and finding the balance between self care and staying grounded.
Exron Music got the opportunity to chat with MYRNE on his inspiration behind this latest track, his growth in his music journey and special moments he shared with the artists that he has collaborated with. Check out the full interview below and stream his latest release ‘Circles’.
Exron Music: Congrats on your new releases and getting signed to Astralwerks. 2022 is looking like a very exciting and busy year for you! How has the experience been getting to share a new chapter of MYRNE with the world?
MYRNE: Thank you! I’ve just been taking it slow, these songs mean a lot to me and it’s been a fundamental shift in my sound. Most of the music was created solo, so I was able to spend a lot of time just going at what felt right.
Exron Music: You have collaborated with many artists previously like Dabin, Manila Killa, and salem ilese, are there any special moments that stood out to you when creating music with these talented DJs/ producers?
MYRNE: To be honest, most of these songs were done over the internet, over COVID! I think they may have turned out very differently if we were able to get in the studio together for some of those. I think for one it was very interesting to see how other people work around their DAW. However, I believe that the best way to collaborate is basically have one person work on it while the other person disappears, and vice versa. It’s only through that are people able to let their individual sounds show.
Exron Music: Your latest single “Circles” draws on a very meaningful message. Can you share the inspiration behind the track?
MYRNE: More like I’m too lazy to write other lyrics! I stuck with “it’s like we’re going in circles” to sum up the year or so I’ve had making music and navigating my personal life. It’s definitely felt that I’ve stagnated or stayed in the same place sometimes, which I’m sure everyone can relate to. But in the end it’s never a race and everyone’s going at their own ideal pace.
Exron Music: We learned that the visualizer for “Circles” is produced by the digital / NFT creator Personality, which is super cool! Are you personally into the digital and technology space and is that something that you are exploring in your musical journey?
MYRNE: I’m just a fan of generative / AI-based visual art and their work stood out to me. I’m always interested to see how technology influences art, because every breakthrough sometimes introduces a different facet or medium to music or visual art that no one’s really thought of before.
Exron Music: The upcoming EP seems like a project that is deeply personal to you. How has your music evolved over the years into this new EP?
MYRNE: This one, like most of my other releases, felt really natural to me! It was just music that flowed really easily, and I still remain excited about the songs even though I’ve listened to them hundreds of times. I feel albums are just slices of time for every artist, every single one of them is going to feel like the most important album yet – but to me they’re just simple albums! It’s important to just put music out there, or you’d get stuck for years wondering if each demo you write is really good enough. Over the years I’ve sort of found what I enjoy listening to the most, and reflecting that in my music. There was a period of time a few years ago where I wouldn’t listen to any of my demos I’d make, because I was always fitting them for a specific purpose (to be played by DJs, to score plays on SoundCloud, etc). It’s the opposite right now – no one is playing my music, nor streaming it on SoundCloud – but I love listening to them!
Exron Music: With that, how would you describe the signature sound for MYRNE to a new listener?
MYRNE: It’s bright, innately melodic, and danceable – and there are a lot of secrets hidden if you know where to look.
Exron Music: As an artist who travels frequently to perform and collaborate, which cities are the most meaningful to you personally and professionally in your career?
MYRNE: The first one would be Singapore, obviously (I live here) – Second would be Los Angeles, where I’ve made so many friends and unforgettable career firsts. Third would be Jakarta, it was my first ever international show as MYRNE and the one that made me think “maybe I could do this for a living!”
Exron Music: Having started out in Singapore in 2015 and building the brand for MYRNE to become one of the biggest EDM exports from Asia, what message of advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are looking to build their music career?
MYRNE: Never stop learning – if you’re interested in a music career, you have to get good at music. Secondly, never be in a rush to release music, but don’t sit on hidden gems forever. Lastly – never, ever download World of Warcraft!
Exron Music: What are you looking forward to in the new year? Are there any special plans that you can let us in at this time?
MYRNE: I have a few collaborations and writing projects with huge influences of mine – and I really can’t say but they’re going to be great.
Exron Music: Last but not least, what do you hope your fans can take away from the song “Circles” and the upcoming EP?
MYRNE: I hope we all get to meet in person and dance together again. That’s really what the whole record is about. I also hope they enjoy the new direction, and grow along! They’ll even be able to hear a lot of my older sounds in the projects I’m releasing going forward.
MYRNE’s fresh sounds and captivating music are sure to push him into the light this festival season. As he charts an exciting new chapter this year with a unique element of electronica and house music in the upcoming EP, listen to “Circles” here in the meantime:
