Exron Exclusive Interview: Ship Wrek

Dance music duo Ship Wrek is creating tidal waves in 2022.

Tripp Churchill and Collin Maguire aka Ship Wrek have been making waves in the EDM scene for years, and have no plans on stopping anytime soon. Due to their high-energy tracks and performances, the duo has gained the attention of fans, industry executives, and other artists in the EDM/dance/house music scene – most notably Skrillex, Diplo, and the Chainsmokers.

Formed in Los Angeles, Ship Wrek have released music through Atlantic Records, Warner Music, Capitol Records, and NCS. The duo has also gone on to create their own label GET WREKD RECORDS, and in 2018 they released the track “Party” through that label.

Moreover, Maguire and Churchill released the song “Stimulate” via Astralwerks in 2021 to raving reviews. Fusing together their classic sound and ambitious drive, “Stimulate” was exhilarating to hear and left listeners craving more music from them.

In response to this, the duo collaborated with MKLA for the brand-new track “Show Me A Sign” which they performed live for the first time at Terminal 5 in New York City late last month. Together for “Show Me A Sign” Ship Wrek and MKLA found a balance between dark atmospheric rhythm and light uplifting vocals.

Ship Wrek is currently on tour with Two Friends and will be performing in Boston at the Big Night Live on Friday, February 18th. Later this year they will also be performing at Lake Havasu Spring Break, Beyond Wonderland Southern California, the Hangout, Bonnaroo, Sunset music festivals, and Tiësto The Trip 2022 in Cancun.

Recently, Exron Music caught up with the duo and were able to speak with them about their creative process, what artists inspire them, and the development of singles “Stimulate” and “Show Me A Sign.”

Exron Music: What artists are you inspired by?

Ship Wrek: We’re inspired by The Chainsmokers, Skrillex, Diplo, & Rüfüs Du Sol.

Exron Music: What made you decide that creating music is what you wanted to do?

Ship Wrek: We both got introduced to dance music through Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”. We had to know how the genre was created and pretty much dove into production for the next 7 years. We’re super thankful to make music and tour for a living!

Exron Music: Your most recent track “Stimulate” was released on November via Astralwerks, what was it like to create that song?

Ship Wrek: We made “Stimulate” during quarantine and knew it was going to be a banger when the clubs opened back up. We went through so many versions of the record to make sure it was perfected.

Exron Music: The artwork for “Stimulate” is of a colorful brain exploding in the middle of other minds. How did you come up with the artwork for the single?

Ship Wrek: We wanted to brand around the idea of the masses opening up their eyes to the truth.

Exron Music: Similarly, the music video “visualizer” for the new track is of colorful-yet saturated MRI scans. Who produced this video and how did you come up for the idea for the video?

Ship Wrek: Our best friend/artist @zachokami helped direct all the art and video for the song.

Exron Music: Talk to us about your new single “Show Me A Sign.” How did the song/collaboration come together?

Ship Wrek: Our team set up a session with MKLA a few months ago. She came through to our studio and we instantly knew we would write something amazing. We wrote the song in a couple hours and it’s now become one of our favorite records.

Exron Music: Your winter/spring tour began in November at Ezoo Adventures in Cancun, Mexico & ends on March 29th at the Nautical Beachfront Resort in Lake Havasu AZ. What has been the most exciting thing about the tour thus far? What has surprised you the most?

Ship Wrek: We’ve been on a bus for most of the tour right now. It’s been amazing to not have to fly to every show and spend more time in cities. Playing shows almost every night has been new but fulfilling.

Exron Music: What has been your favorite part about joining Two Friends on tour?

Ship Wrek: Hanging out with the amazing crew on the bus every day and meeting new people at every stop.

Exron Music: What words of inspiration would you give to other aspiring artists in the house/dance music scene?

Ship Wrek: Be creative, be different, and don’t compare yourself to anyone.
