Kayzo Rallies to Keep Women Safe at Shows with Female-Only Mosh Pits

Kayzo is doing his part to keep women safe at his DJ sets.

American producer Hayden Capuozzo, also known as DJ Kayzo, has set the record straight regarding show safety and inclusivity. Last week, the artist took to Twitter to proclaim his commitment to providing safe spaces at his sets, specifically for women.

Despite the EDM community’s unbridled plurrrr, integrity, kindness, chivalry, and respect, bass can inspire hectic mosh pits – for there is violence in peace and peace in violence. In a slew of radical Tweets, Kayzo expressed relatable concerns, rallying to keep women safe. Although mosh pits are borne of respect and catharsis, sometimes the environment is a tenuous tightrope to walk, especially for females.

“I’ve been doing the all-girl mosh during my set though because I’ve played enough shows to understand… that the mosh pits at my shows at least are predominantly guys and while I love the energy, I ALWAYS notice girls getting tossed around accidentally in them or uncomfortably standing there on the edge trying to not accidentally get rocked.”

Kayo continued with, “I want [to] have a moment for them to be able to really enjoy that type of moment (a mosh) safely without getting tossed by someone twice their size. So, that being said, let’s just protect everyone at shows. Let’s treat others the way we [want to] be treated. Last thing I [want to] do is have to stop the music and yell at someone…”

On a personal note, I am a mystical rave pixie – picture a tall, lanky, platform-rave-booted, glitter ballerina. It’s a mission and a half to skedaddle at the fight sighting of a mosh. The thought of joining one is nothing more than a fat rip of anxiety.

Because I am stick and bones, a teepee tent made of tinfoil, I’ve regretfully never had the opportunity to experience a mosh. I’ve never let that unexplainable energy consume and move me, an energy we all often feel in the crowd. Reading Kayzo’s Tweets gives me hope that one day, fairy wings and all, I will mosh… And what a day that will be!

Heralding from sunny South Florida, I am a proud Florida Woman. In my free time, I surf the swamp, wrangle gators, open fan mail, and tend to my pets. In the wild, I'm most often spotted at immersive art spaces, step tappin' in a shadowed corner of the club, hater blockerz on, totally incognito as your resident EDM spice girl. Although I generally tout my spicy side, if there's one thing I'd love to impress upon the world, it would be this: it's not a waste to give love to those who do not deserve it – it's a gift. The world would be a better place if we gave, in kindness and in mercy, to those who need it most with no expectation in return.
