Moog Synth and Music Pioneer Herb Deutsch Turns 90
The Moog Synth Co-Inventor and Electronic Music Trailblazer, Herb Deutsch, Celebrates His 90th Birthday with All-New GIANTS Documentary
Electronic music innovator, Herb Deutsch, celebrated his 90th birthday on February 9, 2022. Deutsch is the co-inventor of the Moog Synth, a music educator, and a composer. To celebrate the inventor’s birthday, Deutsch sat down with ‘GIANTS‘ for a tell-all documentary.
Herb Deutsch appears in the first episode of the electronic music-focused docuseries, sharing never before heard stories of the pioneer’s career. Deutsch shares his experience collaborating with Bob Moog for the first time in 1964, a partnership that would forever change the course of music as it was known.
In 1964, Deutsch and Moog started to explore the possibilities of a new instrument that would help composers create music. Moog, an electrical engineer, and Deutsch, an experimental composer, came together to create a “portable electronic music studio.” The result: The Moog Synthesizer.
Herb Deutsch, a New York native, has remained the Professor Emeritus of Electronic Music and composition at Hofstra University for over 60 years, holding the title of Chair of the Music Department twice in his career. Deutsch has worked as an educational and marketing consultant and co-founded the Long Island Composers’ Alliance. Deutsch currently works with the New York State School Music Association, initiating its Electronic Music Composition Showcase in 1994.
The new docuseries by ‘GIANTS,’ which is filmed and produced by Moog Music, pays homage and gives honor to the legacy of electronic music artists, allowing them to tell their stories to the world.
‘GIANTS’ will feature more electronic music artists and innovators, such as Daniel Miller of Mute Records, as well as musical duo Beaver & Krause. Moog Music suggests signing up for its newsletter in order to keep up with new episodes from the docuseries.
