Odesza Drops Nostalgic New Single “The Last Goodbye” as Fans Worry They’re Calling it Quits

After a nearly four-year hiatus, legendary electronic music duo Odesza shares their spellbinding new single, “The Last Goodbye”, featuring a vocal piece from Bettye LaVette’s 1965 track, titled “Let Me Down Easy”.

This announcement follows a cryptic series of posts made by Odesza over the last week that caused panic among many fans who interpreted it as a sign the duo would be retiring. An earlier post included a home video montage with the caption, “Is There Ever Really A Last Goodbye?” One fan comment on the post reads, “I know Odesza isn’t sitting here telling me this is their last album after it’s been 3579 years since I last saw them perform.”

The culmination of teasers and ambiguous messages came to fruition yesterday as the duo made their epic return with “The Last Goodbye” on Foreign Family Collective/Ninja Tune. In typical Odesza fashion, the song encompasses feelings of nostalgia and euphoria, putting a contemporary twist on LaVette’s voice. Not to mention, it’s adequately fit for the dancefloor.

Although Odesza shared the tune very deliberately, their intentions remain somewhat equivocal. Many fans speculate “The Last Goodbye” is a teaser for an upcoming studio album, appropriately signaling the long-awaited return of Odesza.

However, a number of fans remained skeptical of the duo’s plans to continue their project after the announcement of their new tune. One fan’s comment on the posts reads, “This better just be the name of a song…& not a GoodBye album?” Another one reads, “I’m so happy but I’m gonna start a riot if this is a goodbye album.”

Odesza has not performed live since 2019, when they embarked on a summer tour, hitting major U.S. festivals such as Electric Forest, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. Currently, the duo has not shared plans to tour or start performing at festivals again.

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!
