Exron Exclusive Interview: Wuki at Audiotistic San Diego 2021 – [Read]

A few weekends ago we traveled out to the inaugural edition of Audiotistic San Diego, and caught up with one of our favorite acts in bass and trap music – Wuki.

We were lucky enough to catch Wuki’s sunset slot on Saturday. The massive stage perfectly suited the bright, flashing visuals and large columns of fire. The DJ spared no energy, often climbing atop the stage and commanding the crowd back and forth.

Our favorite moments from the banger-filled set included a remix of Leotrix’s “Hive Bounce,” and a Super Mario Bros. themed edit. All in all, Wuki played several tracks that had concertgoers going wild.

A few hours after the pyro-filled, mainstage experience we met the lively California-based producer in his trailer. Topics ranged from digital art and NFTs, to important tips for aspiring producers.

Wuki shared many insights about being a touring DJ, and multi-faceted artist. The four-and-a-half minute interview is available on YouTube, with an abridged version below.

Felipe Mejia (Exron Music) with Wuki

Exron Music: How does it feel to play the inaugural edition of Audiotistic San Diego?

Wuki: It’s an honor to play any show like this to be honest. I think we’re all just super happy to be back after the pandemic, and I’m still on that high — so I’m just really happy

Exron Music: In terms of your set, can we expect any unreleased tunes to come out?

Wuki: Yeah! I have two collabs in there: one with Big Gigantic, and a collab with Lil Jon that I’m really happy about. I think there’s a few more silly TikTok edits that I haven’t played yet — so yeah, it’s a lot of new stuff!

Exron Music: What do you think sets Audiotistic SD apart from other fests you’ve played in the past?

Wuki: I think just the fact that it’s in San Diego — it’s such a beautiful landscape, and the crowd here seems to be a little more loose. Yeah and it [the set] was great.

Exron Music: What can you tell us about your Wobblebug NFT project?

Wuki: I could talk forever on this! Basically I’m taking the framework of a PFP (like Bored Apes), but I’m using it for a new music project. If you buy into the NFT, you get a bunch of perks like: a pass to any show we do, stems for every song release, all the music airdropped plus more NFT airdrops — and you get to be part of this community that we’re building online

Exron Music: How does your creative experience as a producer and DJ translate to digital art and NFTs?

Wuki: What’s really cool about NFTs in general is that they provide a lot of freedom for artists, because it’s really just direct from an artist to the consumer. So it’s one of the best ways to support an up-and-coming artist if they want to start it. And it’s a whole new landscape for us all to try and start experimenting in. I’m really excited about it, and adds another layer of creativity.

Exron Music: What is the most important tip you can lend to up-and-coming producers?

Wuki: Trust your gut. If you have a feeling for something, just trust your f*cking gut! Because there’s a lot of times where I got swayed in different directions, and I wish I would’ve trusted my gut. Really just work hard at the craft of making music, if that’s what you want to do. And try to have a positive attitude because it goes so far when you work with people — if you have a negative attitude, people will remember that

Exron Music: What was the most challenging aspect of producing your remix of “As the World Caves In”?

Wuki: I don’t know if it was challenging because I actually took the two-track, and song. I didn’t use the stems to make the remix. I just took the actual song and flipped it. I guess the challenging part was to mix it right, because it was already mixed as a song. I had to re-mix it with my drums and bass and stuff. So getting the mix perfect and vocals to stand out was pretty hard.
