Rezz’s New Album “Spiral” is a Trippy Downtempo Adventure – [REVIEW]
The wait is finally over and the hype has begun as the Queen of Bass music Rezz releases her new album “Spiral.”
During the pandemic and post its peak, Rezz relentlessly teased fans with the promise of an album. Supposedly, her and deadmau5 had spent many an hour in the studio whipping and flipping new music, funneling their cabin fever into artistic production. Back in March of 2021, she referenced an abundance of new music, not only earmarked for her album, but also for the return of live music, the future set lists of performances to come.
As we all know, time flies during the era of corona and the album has officially dropped. “Spiral,” an ode to Rezz’s signature hypnosis glasses, features collaborations from other dope artists such as Deathpact, fknsyd, PVRIS, Metric, Shadow Cliq, Dove Cameron, PEEKABOO, EDDIE, and Fortress of Graves.
As if dropping a full-length LP weren’t enough, Rezz also released her tour dates for 2022, a roster for the months of February through May. The tour includes pitstops such as Vancouver, Detroit, Chicago, New York City, Washington D.C., Houston, Portland, and more. The tour will also feature special guests Eprom, Of the Trees, Wreckno, Kasablanca, Kill Script, A Hundred Drums, and Canabliss.
When speaking on the music, it slaps something vicious. It’s both edgy and soothingly hypnotic – classic Rezz. A standout from the album would certainly be “Vortex,” featuring PEEKABOO. It’s got the same type of ineffable oddness to it, an outer space energy embodied best in her 2017 album “Mass Manipulation,” but it also features a dubstep-esque edge. It goes just a little bit harder than the iconic, infamous track such as “Relax,” but it’s still a slightly different tonality than traditional bass.
In contrast to some of her prior LPs and EPs, this album features a lot of collaborations as well as vocals. Nearly every track off this album has over-arching vocals. Although the sound is certainly the Rezz we all know and love, the lyrical incorporation brings something new and spicy to this most recent release.
