Monstercat Celebrates A Decade of Electronic Music – [Read]
INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL’S JOURNEY THROUGHOUT THE DECADE
Monstercat, a Canadian independent electronic music label based in Vancouver, British Columbia, was founded in 2011 by Ari Paunonen and Mike Darlington. Darlington, not only the founder but now CEO, incepted the label via YouTube, hatching the project from the dregs of his university dormitory, creating music inspired by big, budding dreams.
Unbeknownst to the duo, the label would eventually take off, amassing more than one million followers on SoundCloud alone, one of the world’s largest online streaming platforms for electronic and experimental releases. Monstercat has accrued its following not just by generating great content but via prolificacy, posting music on a tri-weekly basis until 2018, and now four releases per week. In the last year alone, Monstercat generated more than four billion streams across Uncaged, Instinct, and Silk, just three of their streaming platforms. On non-streaming platforms, Monstercat also has hundreds of thousands of engaged fans, most notably on Twitter with 300k and then Instagram with 600k.

This year on July 1st, Monstercat celebrated its 10 Year Anniversary. Kicking off the celebrations and brouhaha a little early on June 28th, the month of July is sure to be filled with daily fan interactions, activities, and music releases to engage the avid fans. Each week, new events will be announced, an itinerary ripe with the promise of new music and dope surprises.
To get the party started, Monstercat dropped an EP containing 16 tracks, all unreleased music from their decade of listenership. Some of the tracks might be lesser-known, infamous crowd favorites, while others might have never been released. Each artist featured on the EP, however, contributed something special to Monstercat’s journey.

The label has represented more than 1,000 artists since inception, a feat as impressive as it is generous, for the label has supported the dreams of all different types of artists, those both big and small, and perhaps even those of young kids, artists, in the making, brewing up some nasty wubs from the comfort of their dorm. A decade later and it all comes full circle.
