FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, BURNING MAN IS CANCELED – [READ]
IT’S A TWOPEAT FOR BURNING MAN IN THE WORST OF WAYS
Late last week, The Burning Man Project’s CEO, Marian Goodell, made a video announcement that she had “exciting” updates regarding Burning Man 2021, which, in hindsight, were not so exciting at all. Marian informed burners from all around the world that the event would unfortunately not be happening in light of the ongoing pandemic and global turmoil.
“We also recognize that the pandemic is not over. We’ve heard your feedback and we are really grateful… but we have made a difficult decision based on the best information available to us. We’ve decided to focus our energy on building Black Rock City 2022.” Marian went on to further extrapolate with, “It’s too important to us, so we’re doubling down on next year. We recognize your need to be in community and your desires, so we suggest that you create community. Take this moment gather together this is the time…”
Although these words are extremely disappointing to hear, especially when so many festivals are just now attempting to get back on their feet, it is understandable. Burning Man leads not only in the festival space, but also globally in terms of ethos and thought – so it makes sense that they’re taking an ultra conservative, yet ironically progressive, stance with the reopening of Burning Man.
The only good morsels of news came with, “We’re going to celebrate and burn week online and off-line, and we’ve heard the questions about the Black Rock desert. The Bureau of Land Management has said public lands will be available all summer so…” Although it’s unclear what she means with the cryptic mentioning of black rock desert remaining open for the summer, it almost sounds like a call to freely camp. Although Black Rock City cannot host Burning Man officially, perhaps an unofficial brouhaha will transpire in the basin, dust swarms all encompassing, with heartbeat of techno calling the sun to rise. See you in the dust…
