WHY PORTER ROBINSON’S ‘NURTURE’ ALBUM IS BREAKING BOUNDARIES IN EDM – [READ]
PORTER ROBINSON DELIVERS DREAMY ANTICIPATED ALBUM
For all those who’ve been following this journey, Porter Robinson has been promoting a forthcoming album for what has felt like a century – but wait no further, for the album is here. “Nurture,” Robinson’s second album since “Worlds,” is his first LP in seven years. As expected, Robinson delivered something nothing short of charmingly strange, etherial, and touching.
The album is a narration of Robinson’s journey as an artist and a tribute to his growth as a person in the space of mental health. It’s budding with change and hope. Piano solos turn into violin duets and then, without segue or apology, the sounds are re-envisioned, disassembled and dismembered, becoming fractured synths before oscillating to piano refrains once more. “Wind Tempos,” a strong example of this unconventional format, is moving in an ineffable way. It’s emotional on a subconscious level, not needing long-winded explanations or clear, concise trains of thought to convey heart.
As an added treat, Robinson showcases his vocals on tracks such as “Blossom,” a duet reminiscent of a lullaby – soft whispers of a love story carry the cadence as an acoustic guitar thrums.
It’s hard to put into words what listening to an album such as Robinson’s feels like. It’s bright and happy, but it’s moving and poignant. It’s the type of happy that’s rooted in depth – the best kind of happiness, the kind that earned it. It’s the type of lightness born of understanding, compassion, and peace, and even heartbreak, but the perseverance of life and love despite. “Sometimes, the inner voice is encouraging, calling for you to run those final few yards. You’re nearly there. Keep going, keep going… it will all be okay in the end.” In the end, it’s more than okay – it’s fantastic, and we’re all humbled to stand witness and listen.
