BURNING MAN IS STILL A GO FOR 2021, ANNOUNCES THEME – [READ]
TERRA INCOGNITA: EXPLORING AN “UNKOWN LAND”
In a bold move earlier this month, the Burning Man Project announced this year’s theme. Although most festivals have postponed for yet another year due to the ongoing nature of this modern plague, Burning Man trudged onward, unflaggingly. In a recent journal post, the 501c organization elaborated on their announced choice of theme with, “The phrase “terra incognita,” Latin for “unknown land,” traces back to the Egyptian scholar Ptolemy, who used it in his Geography to label regions not yet mapped by the Roman Empire. During the Renaissance it was applied rather more cynically to lands not yet under the flag of a European power.” In short, the phrase’s etymology is rooted in concepts and lands not so foreign from burning man’s arid sands, welcoming respite for wanders, and perennial exploratory spirt.
Clearly, nerdism, psychedelic-inspired awareness, combined with this era of scourge influenced the inception of the theme. And although no one is quite sure what the future holds, the past year has been ripe with the exploration of unknown lands.
In their journal article, Burning Man closed with a-food-for-thought statement, in true burner fashion, that was particularly dissectible: “So once upon a time a caravan of Cacophonists stopped somewhere in the desert, drew a line in the dust, and with the words, ‘it’s up to us what we create,’ stepped into the Zone that we now think of as Black Rock City. Let’s recapture that spirit, reset our psychogeography dials to zero, and prepare to be surprised and amazed all over again.”
And although we are a wee bit away from its opening ceremony, we look forward to all that we’ll discover at the helm of our Mad Max vessels, as we scour the desert dunes this summer in pursuit of radicalism and adventure.
